Announcing GlobalComix Reader v3

Christopher Headquarters • Jul 6, 2021

We believe that when you read a digital comic book, it should feel good no matter the device that you’re using. It should capture that same experience as if you had the comic right there in your hands, flipping from page to page while engrossed in an incredible story. We’ve taken a hard look at our default and vertical reader and decided that it was time not just for an update, but a complete overhaul -- rebuilding it entirely from scratch.

Now, if the comic creator doesn’t have interactive framing, you’ll jump right into our new vertical reader. It’s designed for a smooth reading experience, with accurate and snappy zoom so you can dig into wherever your eye takes you.

Here's all the things that have changed:

General Reading Experience

We've completely re-written our vertical layout reading experience from the ground up. The new experience was designed and built with specific focus on performance, intuitiveness, and mobile gesture support. The most important changes include browser-native pan-zoom-pinch support, making it smooth and easy to read bigger pages on small devices.

We've moved the release-to-release controls and navigation in-line into the reader, rather than being hidden behind an overlay toolbar, and gotten rid of the bottom toolbar alltogether. You can now also access the comic details/info panel directly from the "Series Info" button on the top of each release.

Improved Reader Settings

New in the viewer settings is an option to always use the vertical reading layout for all comics (when not interactive), and along with the vertical viewer, we added some customization options for image spacing and header display so you can choose what experience is best for you.

Finally, we've added an option to change the image quality for all layout modes. This will allow desktop/laptop folks on lower bandwidth connections to use the mobile image sizes, or folks on tablet to increase the quality of the images by setting desktop mode.

WARNING: Changing the image quality settings will DRASTICALLY alter the amount of bandwidth/data the reader uses.

Comic Info Panel

Very often, the first view of a comic that a reader might get is chapter 1 page 1 after clicking a link in social media, email, or messages. This could often be a bit confusing as readers would not be sure exactly where they were or what they were looking at. In order to make the reader context as rich and informative as possible, we have added a "Series Info" pane that lists out all the meta-data for your comic and all the releases available for easy navigation back and forth, and readers who are logged in will also be able to see a progress bar for each release that they have read.

Be sure to click "Like" on all of your favorite comics!

Crowdfinder Integration

Creators have been able to display a banner about active crowdfunding campaigns on their profile pages for a long time, and it's been possible to browse and discover comics through crowdfunding filters. Today we have added a deeper integration where creators can let readers know about their campaigns directly in the reading experience.

Clicking the "Back Project" button will take the reader to the crowdfunding project in a new tab. Be sure to support your favorite creators!

Footer Credits & Suggested Comics

And lastly, to wrap up the reading experience, we've added a contextual footer after each release that displays credits to the creator/publisher and let's you follow them for updates, along with a set of suggested comic recommendations that are similar to the one you've been reading.

Be sure to follow your favorite creators!

That's all for this time, be sure to to give it a try with some of our popular comics!
