August Feature #2: When fantasy overlaps reality

By KevinFeatured Comics • Aug 10, 2021

Walt Disney had a simple but elegant quote to describe our fascination with fantastical worlds: "Fantasy and reality often overlap." It's true, too. In many ways, fantasy is often a reflection of our real world, painted in a more adventurous or mystical way. Take for example recently featured The Arcane Cocktail Enthusiast. It's the story of a cocktail bar owner in San Francisco that is also a sorceress.

There are a multitude of ways to create stories based in fantasy worlds, whether it's creating an entirely new universe outside of our own, or keeping it grounded on an alternate Earth. We've picked out five fantasy comics that we haven't...

August Feature #1: Popular Last Week

By KevinFeatured Comics • Aug 3, 2021

We wanted to kick the August features off with another look at our recently updated popularity algorithm to highlight some of the most popular stories on GlobalComix. Last time we took a look at the most popular comics over the past year, but we felt that something shorter would allow for the freshest of popular stories to surface.

For today's feature, we're looking at the most popular comics over the past 7 days. You can see the full list, sorted by popularity, here. Let's take a look at the top 5, and don't forget to join in the discussion for any of these comics with the in-reader comments and reactions!

The 34 Comics of July 2021

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 31, 2021

It's hard to believe that we're already another month into 2021. July seems like it went by so fast, and it's no doubt that having great stories to read contributed to time flying by. This month we looked at crowdfunding comics, series that were popular over the past year, and a handful of genres and themes. We also took a stab at sharing what was new on GlobalComix as part of the feature series, and we welcomed BHP Comics to the platform.

In total we featured 34 great comics during the month of July, and we're excited to get into August so we can share more. Let us know your favorites in the comments!

Note: This list is not a ranking, it's simply the...

July Feature #7: You're the Best

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 30, 2021

You're the Best by Joe Esposito has been stuck in my head the entire time that I've been thinking about the feature theme to close out July. With that being the case, and the song debuting on the Karate Kid album, it's only fitting that we end the month's feature series with a handful of comics about fighting and martial arts.

In the words of Joe Esposito, history repeats itself. Try and you'll succeed! Let us know your favorites in the comics, and feel free to share any other fighting comics you enjoy.

Whenever a new creator or publisher brings their amazing work to GlobalComix, there's always an air of excitement in our virtual office. We get to discover incredible new stories alongside the GlobalComix community, and it's no different with our recent announcement of BHP Comics joining our growing community of creators. The talent on display always has us in awe, and humbled, that our platform has been chosen as a destination for these wonderful experiences.

We've picked out five series from BHP Comics to spotlight as part of our feature series, and we're sure you'll enjoy them as much as we did. Be sure to share your thoughts within the reading...

July Feature #5: Admitting what we don't know

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 19, 2021

SciFiChick has a spotlight today on Mad Cave Studios, and we wanted to add to that selection of stories by putting together our own list. Think of it as extended reading to get the week started. We've picked out a variety of themes and settings, from stories grounded on Earth, to private detectives travelling the stars.

Is science really about admitting what we don't know? Or is it about embracing it? Let's be honest, admitting is just the first step in a long journey, so it's a good thing we've got some great comics to keep us busy.

The folks at Graphic Policy and 3 Million Years do great weekly recaps of new comics available here on GlobalComix, but we've had a such a large influx of new series recently that we wanted to highlight some of them as well. This is just a small sampling of the fantastic stories arriving every week, so be sure to browse all of the comics available to discover your next favorites.

July Feature #3: Apocalypse... Al?

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 13, 2021

When growing up, there were a few things that I considered hobbies. Collecting comic books and baseball cards were two of them, playing baseball and basketball another pair, and then there was watching wrestling. My friends and I made a ritual of watching WCW and WWE (they were known as WWF back then) every time it was on TV. One of my favorites was none other than Al Snow. He was a little bit of crazy coupled with a batch of hilarious, and was a pretty good wrestler to boot.

So when I started to think of a theme for today's feature, Broken Icon Comics made is super easy. Take a pinch of digital comics, a dash of Al Snow (and Head!), then toss in the apocalypse and...

July Feature #2: Popular Over the Past Year

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 8, 2021

Since we recently rolled out our new reading experience, we thought it was a good time to also utilize our new popularity algorithm to share some of the most popular comics over the past year. It's no surprise that these stories also have some of the most views on GlobalComix in that timeframe, but that's not the only thing the algorithm looks at. Whether these comics are completely new to you, or something you've already enjoyed in the past, it's a great time to give them a read.

Let us know your thoughts on this type of feature. It's a new one that we're trying out, so we'd love to hear your feedback on it. Would you like to see more...

July Feature #1: Crowdfunding Comics

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jul 1, 2021

We're going to kick this month off right by taking a look at some of the comics running crowdfunding campaigns. We've featured some of them in the past, but there are two new entries as well. We highly recommend checking out all four of the campaigns -- they're all great stories created by even greater teams.

Feel free to share any campaigns you've found in the comments, and for the creators out there, take a look at this video by @EricTapper to learn how you can set up your campaign on GlobalComix. It will allow readers to discover your campaign easily on the browse comics page.

The 40 Comics of June 2021

By KevinFeatured Comics • Jun 30, 2021

We're at the end of another month, so let's take a look back at all the comics featured during June. We started the month off big with our announcement of Heavy Metal arriving on GlobalComix, and the train kept rolling from there. We featured comics in the action, slice of life and crime genres, as well as comic themes like monsters and stories that were primarily historical in nature. We also featured two other publishers for the first time, with Bliss on Tap joining GlobalComix and Antarctic Press bringing a ton of new content to the platform.

Reflecting on the month as a whole, 'big' is probably an understatement. There were a lot of fantastic...

When we think about crime stories, there's a wide range of eras that are popular to focus on. We've picked out five capers that fall within that spectrum, going all the way back to the 1950s with a vigilante tale, moving through the 80s with two stories and capping off with a series set in 1999. There's also a story of a retiring detective with one last case, and it's one he never hoped to see.

Today's feature highlights comics that have active crowdfunding campaigns. Since we typically feature five comics at a time, we're also featuring a selection of comics from the Slice of Life genre to cap things off.

For creators that would like to have their comics included in the crowdfunding roundup, you'll want to use our crowdfinder tool to make sure it's listed as active. @EricTapper created a great video that walks you through the steps to make that happen. You can watch it here.

For June's fourth feature we wanted to take a look at stories that reflect on moments from the past. We've featured plenty of modern day comics and stories based in the future, so we thought it was a good time to hone in on tales of yore. The five comics picked out include both fictional and historial stories. Some of them even put a new spin on well-known tales from folklore.

The 41 Comics of May 2021

By KevinFeatured Comics • May 31, 2021

As we wind down one month and get ready for another, let's take a look back at the 41 comics we featured during the month of May.

Outside of our official announcement of Source Point Press coming to GlobalComix, the month had a heavy focus on smaller teams and individual creators. We wanted to make sure that our features continued to align with the vision for the platform as a whole: to make it easier to discover the amazing work of indie comic creators.

No matter the size of the team that worked on the comics featured in May, there's one thing that rings true with all of them, and that's great storytelling. Let us know your favorites in the comments, and be...

May Feature #8: A History of Ideas

By KevinFeatured Comics • May 28, 2021

Often times we're challenged to think big, and when we do, we're told to think bigger. There's no better place for thinking big than in science fiction. Human history is made up of ideas that have become reality, primarily on the shoulders of big thinkers. Sometimes innovation even draws its inspiration from those wild and crazy ideas of the past.

Ray Bradbury once said "Science fiction is the most important literature in the history of the world, because it's the history of ideas, the history of our civilization birthing itself." We see it all the time in mainstream media, film, and literature. So for May feature #8, we're highlighting...

May Feature #4: Imagination Is Everything

By KevinFeatured Comics • May 13, 2021

When thinking about a theme for today's feature, I wanted to pair something with the adventure feature from earlier this week. It was a pretty easy decision to make: fantasy. By definition, most comics can be considered fantasy. However, the fantasy genre is at its best when it acts as an extension of adventure.

From fellowships to kingdoms, fantasy stories are all about stoking the flames of imagination. Skyscrapers become castles; cars become carriages, and magic is prevalent. Ultimately, fantasy is often a reflection of our own realities, simply painted in a different light.

Check out all five of the comics featured below, and let us know your favorite fantasy stories in the comments!
