Harvey Awards Shoutout
And finally, a huge shoutout to all the nominees and winners of the 2025 Harvey Awards, which took place earlier this month at New York Comic-Con.
Four of this year’s winners are available to read right here on GlobalComix:
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees by Patrick Horvath
(IDW Publishing)
Book of the Year
Don’t. Murder. The locals. This is small-town serial killer, upstanding citizen, and adorable brown bear Samantha Strong’s cardinal rule. After all, there’s a sea of perfectly ripe potential victims in the big city just beyond the forest, and when you’ve worked as hard as Sam to build a cozy life and a thriving business in a community surrounded by friendly fellow animal folk, warm decor, and the aroma of cedar trees and freshly baked apple pie…the last thing you want is to disturb the peace. So you can imagine her indignation when one of Woodbrook’s own meets a grisly, mysterious demise—and you wouldn’t blame her for doing anything it takes to hunt down her rival before the town self-destructs and Sheriff Patterson starts (literally) barking up the wrong tree.
Witch Hat Atelier by Kamome Shirahama; translated by Stephen Kohler
Kodansha
Best Manga
In a world where everyone takes wonders like magic spells and dragons for granted, Coco is a girl with a simple dream: She wants to be a witch. But everybody knows magicians are born, not made, and Coco was not born with a gift for magic. Resigned to her un-magical life, Coco is about to give up on her dream to become a witch…until the day she meets Qifrey, a mysterious, traveling magician. After secretly seeing Qifrey perform magic in a way she’s never seen before, Coco soon learns what everybody “knows” might not be the truth, and discovers that her magical dream may not be as far away as it may seem…
Dark Horse Books
Best International Book
Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets. Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the red scare Communist witch hunts of the time. Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans! Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable. * Dark Horse is very proud to present the first three Blacksad stories in a beautiful hardcover collection, completely relettered to the artist's specifications and with the latest album, Red Soul, in English for the very first time. * This internationally acclaimed series has won nearly a dozen prestigious awards — including the Angoulême Comics Festival prizes for Best Series and Best Artwork-and is a three-time Eisner Award nominee.
Superman (DC Studios), directed by James Gunn
Based on Superman (DC Comics) by Jerry Siegel & Joe Schuster.
Best Adaptation from Comic Book/Graphic Novel
And here’s the cool part, the film isn’t based on one single comic. It’s inspired by All-Star Superman, Superman Birthright, Superman: Camelot Falls, and even the Golden and Silver Age tales of the Man of Steel.
James Gunn even had the cast read those stories before filming, which explains why the movie feels like pure comic book energy from start to finish.
If you caught that spark on screen, now you know why, everyone was living and breathing their characters. Super inspiring… no pun intended.
You can read them too with the links we provided above.
