Do you have certain shows or games you go to for advice or inspiration?
I'm not much of a game player, but I'm always looking for something new to try. I have a switch and Steam on my PC. (sadly that's it)
My favorite games have been ARK: Survival Evolved and Okami. I've looked into stray, but the hype around it died so fast, is it really that good?
Idk I have a bunch of games I go to for inspiration. Like Fallout 1, 2 and New Vegas or some of the elder scrolls games and etc. Some recent ones that inspired me are Xenoblade and Freelancer.
I haven't played Stray myself but it seems to have been recieved well. It's relatively short too (compared to certain other releases) so it can't hurt to try right?
Since the majority of my creative work at the moment is focused on writing blog content and coming up with cool feature ideas, I don't necessarily take inspiration from games. But if I find myself dealing with writer's block I might take a break and play a game that's a little more relaxed to clear my head. Anything that doesn't require a lot of critical thinking seems to help with that.
Some of my favorite shows that have been really inspirational to me are Twin peaks, Mr Robot, Death Note, Bleach, it's always sunny in Philadelphia, Oz, Breaking bad, JoJo's bizarre adventure, Dark, and Castlevania.
Some inspirational games would be the final fantasy series, Killer 7, No more heroes series, all the telltale games, life is strange, persona series, Undertale and Deltarune, Earthbound/mother series, Mortal Kombat series, Bayonetta series, and Castlevania again lol.

Not shows or games, but when I want a jolt of inspiration I usually read one or more of the following:
- any 1970s Jack Kirby comic
- Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo
- anything by Naoki Urasawa
- an EC comic story, especially something by Will Elder, John Severin, Jack Davis
Basically, reading another comic that was masterfully done makes me want to try and reach that level. I find games are good for stress relief but they are also a time-suck, so I try to limit my gaming time - I've got a comic to write and draw!
@MattSchofield - Naoki Urasawa is definitely an amazing creator! I love his work! Are you familiar with Junji Ito, he's a fantastic horror writer.
@Kevin - Yeah, Writer's block is a horrible thing to deal with. I admit I have my fair share of it. TnT
I guess I'm inspired by any cartoon that comes into mind.
Peanuts, pre-March 2013 SpongeBob, Regular Show, Sitting Ducks, What's with Andy? and so on.
As for video game mechanics and stuff, I could be inspired by...
- The Sly Cooper Games
- Ratchet and Clank
- 3D Mario
- Sonic (marginally)
- (I can't believe I'm typing this in) The Final Fantasy VII Remake
- Bully
@ArtCrumbs Yeah, I've read Uzumaki, it was quite disturbing! Horror in comics is hard to do, so I always admire a creator like Ito who can actually pull it off!
@KOI Oh Hollow Knight has a great world! The art direction also helped to push that interest as well!
One little thing that I like about hollow knight is that there's also some interesting details in the background of what you see in the foreground (like basically what you are side-scrolling through as the player character) which helps to give it a sense of depth and that there might be a bit more to that area if that makes sense!
Can't wait for Silksong! It looks like its gonna be just as good!
@Karumtoo-Rexo
ooh nice list here! I actually plaid Sly Cooper, N64 Mario and Sonic games as a kid! I actually have the sonic games on my switch now I think?
Q: Do you have certain shows or games you go to for advice or inspiration?
A: Games...Assassins Creed Odyssey, Fallout 76, Far Cry New Dawn, GTA Vice City Remastered, Cyber Punk 2077...
More Importantly...Table Top Games!
Hero Quest, Risk, Warhammer 40k, Custom D&D campaigns!
Shows? Re Runs of Cowboy Beebop, Sergio Leone Westerns...Terrible B Movies from back in the Day, Film Noir...Some Wes Anderson...All sorts of Sci fi, Horror...Reservation Dogs...Pre Snap Marvel Movies. Old Awesome Movies. New Movies. Terrible Movies!
Kind of yes, and kind of no - my new story Kalvai originally was inspired by the Darkstalkers character Morrigan Aensland, a succubus. So I thought what if I make an incubus character? For ideas about the whimsical nonsense, I play a bit of Bayonetta to give me that feeling of frantic craziness that I want to show in the story. Other than that, most of my ideas come from gut feeling and from some movies.
Yes, I do! Even though I prefer to study the manga/graphic novels/novels that I read:
Games: Final Fantasy, The Witcher 3, God of War, Dragon Quest...
Show: One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Jujutsu Kaisen, FMA Brotherhood, Naruto, Gotham, Vikings, Peaky Blinders...
I've learned so much from these shows as well as so many others!
@Copoki I think you'd like Vinland Saga if you haven't read it already
@ArtCrumbs Yes! I've seen the anime, and it's fantastic! I've been thinking about reading the manga instead of waiting for the next season. Maybe I will! I just love the way it explores profound themes, and I find inspiration every time I watch the series. Thorfinn also serves as a perfect case study on how to write a great protagonist.
I used to GM Modern D20 games with my friends. It was a lot of fun, but most importantly an amazing exercise in world building, storytelling, and character interaction. It also gave me the chance to be a bit lazy when absorbing potential character dynamics, since my friends would obviously play their own characters and offer their perspectives without me having to think too much about it.
For shows, "Arrested Development" for comedy and story weaving, and "Community" for both self contained and overarching structure.
In the comic'verse, I always reach for "Order of the Stick", "The Goon", or "Lackadaisy Cats" if I need any inspiration.
For techniques I just learn from reading fuckton of mangas from authors whose art I find interesting (got a hobby to check debut chapters and guess which one gonna be a bigger boom), but Japanese superhero shows are my main inspo for tropes and general vibe of my work.
Series written for kids felt like it requires its own technique to pull something that could be enjoyable for audiences of any age without downplaying any of the age group. Not too much edge, not excessively lighthearted, it's just balance. Those shows are doing exactly that.
As for video games, I've been enjoying Monster Hunter since Rise and just started World, so might stare at it longer and study their armor designs. I've also been a long fan of Hollow Knight though I don't think I'll ever know how to cook as hard as Team Cherry LOL.
