Earn Subscription Revenue on Your Free Previews

ArtCrumbs Headquarters • May 7, 2024

Today we’re proud to announce an improvement to how you can monetize your comics - even when you want to offer free previews. We’ve introduced new functionality that pays out subscription revenue for free page reads, as long as there is a paywall somewhere in the series.

This gives you the flexibility to offer more free pages or even free releases, and still earn money when a GlobalComix Gold member reads your series. Some of you may have already noticed that you have pending income, and this improvement is why.

Everyone can do it, and there are no surprises:

  • You don’t sign a contract.
  • No minimum page reads or publishing schedule is required to qualify.
  • You own the rights to your content and aren’t required to publish with us exclusively.
  • All creators and publishers can earn subscription revenue
  • Both standard and expiring paywalls are eligible.

Simply go into your Series Settings -> Advanced -> Monetization Settings and choose a free preview model that makes the best sense for your content. You can even enable an expiring paywall if you prefer. Details on how to set that up are below.

Setting Up An Expiring Paywall

To set up an expiring paywall, you first need to open the series you want to edit. Open your Manage Comics page and select the series that you want to edit. I am going to be editing Godsbane for this example.

Once you have your series open and you can see all of your releases, you need to click on the "Advanced" in the upper right corner of this page.

Once you can see your advanced settings, you'll need to click on “Monetization > Settings”.

On the monetization settings page, you'll scroll down to the second section with the Default Access Model and expiring paywall settings. You'll need to set your model to "Paid", check the "Paywall Expires" box, and then input how maybe days you want your releases to be PAID before they expire. In my example here, I have 7 days. So 7 full days after I've published it will become expired, and then available for anyone to read without a subscription. So plan this wisely when publishing your releases!

Here's an example: If I published a release at 8AM On May 1st, my paywall expires at 8AM on the 8th of May.

Once you are done making changes, hit that orange "Save changes" button. You should see the page refresh and see a small "success" appear in the bottom right corner of your screen.

This will retroactively apply to any existing PUBLISHED releases as well. You can confirm that your expiring paywall worked by opening past, published releases. You will see a "Free (expired)" on any pages that are now expired

Whether using an expiring paywall, only charging for the most recent release, or setting a paywall somewhere, we’re confident this change will open new ways to monetize your free comics.

So if I have it set that the first x pages are free, but paid after that, does that qualify as a paywall in this arrangement?

What percentage are we being paid? When will this change be reflected in our revenue tab?

@paulaxel Yes, that counts! : )

@KenBee313 That percentage depends on a few different factors such as if you have Creator Pro or some other partnership level with GlobalComix. You can find out what your percentage is by going to Creator settings > Revenue > Payout settings. The percentage amount is the share that you will get after all the revenue is doled out to creators/publishers.

For example: If your earnings are 1$ USD, and your share is 65% (standard), you will get $0.65 of that dollar. That amount will then go to your pending income for confimation. Once confirmed, it will be in your confirmed income section. <br>
