What Genre Grabs You More Than Anything?
So I'm digging through my catalog of nearly 20 years of IPs and trying to decide what, if any, I want to maybe revive and post here on GC. The problem is that I don't know what genres people are reading now and I've got stuff that covers a LOT of categories.
Any thoughts? Super Heroes? Gaming? Westerns? Swords & Boards?
In general, it's hard to determine what will be the most successful on any platform. When looking at which genres have the most, that's not really a good way to look for "what people are reading". Genres trend, as you pointed out, but not just with readers, but with creators as well. One of my favorite genres, mystery isn't as popular as it used to be. Supernatural and superheros are picking up steam again, especially in the graphic novel and manga markets.
A genre with a low number of comics could be good or bad for you. It would give less competition, but it might mean that not a lot of people are interested in reading them. Ultimately, I don't think a low number of comics in a genre is a good way to decide to not post something. If you are good at marketing, finding target audience and then getting those people to read your work, the genre you use, as long as it is relevant, shouldn't matter.
We are always happy to give feedback and help if you need some with finding your audience!
Hope that helps!
I love me a good dystopia to be fair. I think my favourite comics are those that aren't strictly one genre or another but instead a hybrid of several genres. For me my favourite genres are the ones I write in: superhero, sci-fi, contemporary fantasy etc etc. I've always loved those genres.
If you're looking for popularity, romance is oversaturated to high hell but it sure does pull numbers.
