Personal thoughts on illustrated novels in comic spaces?
Since recently changing up my format from comic to novel + illustrations I have found it quite a bit harder to garner engagement than I'd anticipated. I knew it was going to be a tough old time getting people to move from a primarily visual format to a text format but perhaps i grossly underestimated.

Another concern I've had is that people may potentially be offended by the idea that a novellist can just waltz in and start posting a novel on a comic site? I love the comic community and feel my story is more befitting to readers here, but I'm concerned people aren't giving it a chance because it's a novel, which is inherently a more difficult/time consuming read?

So far GlobalComix have been super supportive of my re-release, having it on the front page for seemingly weeks now which is awesome, so I thank you guys for that!

But yeah, I guess I'm basically just asking for you guys to honestly chuck your thoughts on this matter my way. I am undoubtedly having a lot more fun working on Citizen Five the way it is now, it's infinitely better for my work/life balance, I'm just trying to think of ways I can work around this tiny niche I seem to have backed myself into.

Do you read novels? If so/not, why? Do illustrations and more comic-like concepts within the novel change this for you? Do you think novels get a bad rep in comic spaces? How could this be combated?

Any thoughts would be super helpful for me! Thanks peeps!

Re: Some profile suggestions with customization
I think the ability to post images in statuses would be pretty bomb so you can post teasers and sneak peeks of upcoming episodes or show off some art to keep followers engaged.

Not a profile suggestion but being able to set a thumbnail or cover art for individual releases within a series would be bomb too!

Re: Web comics
You got your wish! A lot of us vertical scrolling folks have moved over to GC now from platforms that didn't really appreciate our work for what it is, so now there's no shortage of vertical scrolling fun!

Re: Any Travel/Vacation plans?
Oooo so I'm actually currently on holiday in Javea, Spain which is lovely! I have plans to go camping with some friends at a site fairly local to home (in the UK) next month then I'm going to be going to Wales for a bit with my family to visit extended family (which we pretty much do every year.)

I'm also in talks with a friend about going interrailing with her next year, we really want to revisit a place in Germany we went to on a school trip because at the time we were all pretty mentally unwell and it'd be nice to revisit it and make happier memories!

I've just graduated from university so I may be going back to my university town now and then to see old friends too, but in the meantime I'm trying to find a job to get started in the working world!

Re: What are your 2022 goals?
I think my main goal would be to try and complete a comic dub of my first couple of episodes by the end of this year for Youtube! Only issue is I have no voice actors lol...

Re: What part of comic/manga making do you want to learn about the most?
For me personally screentones and writing for short comics would be interesting as they aren't topics I've delved into much myself yet.

In terms of advice I feel the community as a whole still needs to know more about I think panelling for webtoons and lettering are pretty crucial.

Re: What does "ultimate success" mean to you?
Honestly, I'd be happy to have a small cult following that all enjoy my comic as much as I enjoy creating it.

Also to complete my comic, or at least the first season would be a huge success for me.

Re: When you have a character and you can't come up with a story for them.
It can be quite difficult to reverse-engineer a plot to serve a character as characters are usually meant to serve the plot but here's some ways you might be able to have a go at it:

1) Think about your character's personality and positive/negative qualities (if you have written those) and try to create a story which challenges some of their negative qualities and perhaps jeopardises their positive ones. This allows for character development.

2) Write a whole plot first, with placeholders for your other characters too, then work your character in as a key person within the plot. You could have the plot be entirely irrelevant to your character then change your character to fit it.

3) If you feel you are completely unable to work your character into any sort of plot, don't be afraid to "kill your darling" and rework him until he fits, you may be attached to him now but trust me he'll become so much more to you when you know he has a purpose of some sort. You can always recycle aspects of him your really like and turn him into an entirely new character altogether, but I understand a lot of people are reluctant to do this sort of thing, which is totally cool too!

I hope those three options help, there's no right or wrong way to write a story but there are definitely methods that make matters easier for you and allow you to reach your full potential as a writer. Best of luck!
