Color Vs. B & W

What are your thoughts on color comics vs. black and white?  My comic has both black and white in chapter 1 and color starting in chapter 2.  I grew up reading Frank Miller and fell in love with black and white comics so I always envisioned my comic in black and white, but now that my life long buddy is putting excellent color to it, I have changed my mind and I think the color pages are much better.  Just curious what the consensus is amongst the community.

I think both color and B&W have their place in the comic world. I agree Frank Miller's work is just perfect in B&W and really gives his worlds a feeling a depth and foreboding. Same thing for the original Ninja Turtle books.

I personally like doing color for my book since I try to get a more anime aesthetic. I have tried B&W only and it never felt right for my style of art, but to each their own. Plus coloring is fun :).

I’ve tried coloring and it’s not for me.  My buddy is good at it, but when I try to do it I just think how I’d rather be drawing!

Both have their pros and cons. Color can look nicer but you have to consider the increase in time to produce each page and the added expense when you decide to print it (color can easily be twice the cost).

Didn’t consider print costs. It definitely takes longer to finish the pages! I need to learn to use line weights more effectively to give my black and white work more depth

I myself prefer and enjoy b&w. I can appreciate color tho I hate doing it and enjoy good linework far more. It all boils down to what you want to do and which one is more suited to your work flow.

I like to do both depending on what tone I want to give my story :)

That’s a good point. My issue is that when I’m trying to learn to color I can only think I would rather be drawing!

I also prefer BW art for my comic, though I like to make manga. Even when I'm not making manga pages, I still prefer BW art. It just feels better imho

I've seen so much good Manga in BW. I think BW works really well for Manga!

I prefer BW in general when reading, not just making my own manga. Something about BW art is just awesomely amazing and I love it.

zhengomono posted Jul 30, 2023

I'm mostly doing BW because of time issues. But I also just like some of the inking techniques that work better in BW, such as hatching and blocking sections in black (it can work in color, but you do have to be more careful about it in my experience)

MikeHoncho1012 posted Jul 30, 2023

Agreed! I’ve always traditionally worked in BW and it is hard now that I have a colorist to look at it from a lense of “how will they be able to color this?”

Color is amazing, but the line work and detail on B&W work is unmatched. The ability some artists have to indicate tone and texture with ink is amazing and I’ll always love a goo monochrome comic. Color kind of allows you to take it easy on the line quality without sacrificing too much quality since you can make up for it with great colors. They both have some strengths.

I think it depends. For some comics, especially action or horror comics, black and white can make them look even better. Mind you, I myself like colour in comics because it makes them feel alive. I guess it really depends on the artist. Robert Kirkman has a way of doing both beautifully.
