I'm New To This Platform, Is It Worth It?
Saw this platform discussed on a comment talking about the shadiness of a popular webcomics platform as a better alternative. I am checking it out because I wish to publish webcomics hopefully sometime in the nearby future, but am feeling discouraged when I read what this site has to offer and find high-quality stuff that only has like twenty views. Is this platform worth it? What have other's experiences been like?
It's early but the potential is there. 2023 might just be the year it takes off as there is a lot of big things dropping that should drive more engagement. As with most platforms, you get out of it what you put into it.
As far as the platform itself, you'd be hard pressed to find one that is as feature rich and easy to use as this one.
The website is still pretty small. So not as much reader as big platform as webtoon and tapastic. To get views you need to promote. I started 3 months ago I have now 437k views. If you put the effort you will get readers. Global comix is the one that advise me to try it and encouraged me to keep trying. And look at me now. If you want to get views hit me up a got a list of place you could try to promote. They don't come to you than go to them and drag them back with content ;3c
And no money? My comic is totally free and still get money. All you need is to use the tools given to you. Don't believe me you can look at my post explains how to do it and the proof that it works. https://globalcomix.com/forums/threads/433/how-to-get-money-on-your-free-comic
It won't pay your bill but it will help you get some money if you play your cards correctly unlike webtoon and tapa lack off in my case ;3
This platform is very small yes BUT I do feel like it has IMMENSE potential to rival the likes of Tapas and Webtoons
Plus the creators are already getting highly respectable comic creators/publishers to post their comics on this site!
Also so far this has been one of the more money friendly places I've been to, so many people have seen my comic here and have paid me generously for it.
From a money perspective, I will say this: It is worth it and has the potential to be REALLY worth it down the line.
I have 14K subscribers on Webtoon currently, and about 660K total views. Per month, I make $6 ish dollars in their ad revenue program, plus I occasionally get $100 in creator rewards if I can manage to get 40K monthly views. Webtoon is REMOVING those creator rewards this month, meaning, I will now only make about $6/month from their platform. Other than video reward ads(which need 200k views PER MONTH to get), there are NO other ways to make money there now. Sure, over time I MAY get more views, but we're talking YEARS to get PENNIES of increased pay, for a series with 14K readers. Webtoon has reached a point where even the people who cleared their garden wall are making LESS than the meager amount they got before and it genuinely feels like we are doomed to make next to nothing, even if we're lucky enough to get huge audiences.
Here on globalcomix, I have a humble 7 followers. ONE of them unlocked a paid episode this month so far, and I've made $0.93. Not a crazy amount of money, but think about that proportionately to what I earn on Webtoon. If even a dozen or so people pay to read my most recent episode(only my most recent one has a paywall on it, so it's like fast pass on Webtoon), I can be making the same amount of income here as I do on Webtoon.
This site is actually giving you a CHANCE to get money, right from the start. There's no ridiculous threshold to cross and in theory, the bigger you get, the more money you can earn here. This place is at least giving creators a fair shot.
And that's just from a money standpoint. I think the features here are really nice and that the community is really welcoming. This place just needs some time. The devs appear to be putting in the work to make a really nice app and I think when it launches, many more readers will start appearing here. It's up to you if you wanna take a leap a faith on this place but at least for me, I think it's worth it.
I just joined this site yesterday after seeing it mentioned on a forum that was complaining about how evil Webtoon is. And legitimately, Webtoon is horrific. Their expectations for their paid creators are insane and very literally leading people to death from overwork, and they give basically nothing to canvas creators.
Tapas isn't much better. Their revenue options are almost nonexistent. Ad payment is a joke.
In the end, what do you consider "worth it?" For me, right now, it's having a place where I can host my work and be treated with respect and appreciation by the company I am freely hosting my product at. It's our content that makes them money. We deserve a proper and respectable share of that.
And honestly, it's not even the actual money itself, but the principle of the matter. At least for me.
I hope this place grows. If they take good care of their content creators, it will, and it will grow fast.
I will argue one point I've seen, though. I don't think it should be entirely the responsibility of the creators to do all the marketing. Any decent hosting site should put money into promoting their creators and featuring certain works. That's just industry standard.
@CandiedCotton To their credit, it seemed like GC was hitting the convention scene really hard last year promoting the hell out of the site. They also do some heavy promoting on Reddit. I would imagine they'll go all in once the app drops on mobile this year.
@cantrell Oh I totally believe it, I'm definitely not saying they aren't putting in effort. Just that it should be expected, of course. I think Global Comix is doing very well, and it seems they're very genuine in their support of artists. Something we unfortunately just don't see enough of out there.
I think in the long run Globalcomix is going to become the biggest site for comic hosting, it's steadily growing from what I can see but the site is making the right calls where it counts, which is part of why I started posting yesteday and am going to be referring all of my webcomic listing links to the Globalcomix versions of my comics ^^.
@CandiedCotton I started mirroring onto here yesterday I really like it here as well so far, much better sense of variety of comics you can read compared to other sites. :D
i agree with what @cantrell says
I just joined GlobalComix after starting to post my work on WebToon and Tapas, then reading distressing stories about their bad business practices (mostly WebToon).
It was also taking a helluva long time to convert my comic to the webcomic format -- a whole different medium, when I'd designed it for print. When I realized how smooth and easy the posting process was here, with a focus on panels (which is how I'm accustomed to thinking about comix), I deleted my accounts on the other two sites and uploaded everything here. I have a job; I can't be spending forever doing that work for somebody else's site.
And instead of this being a side project that was going to take months, I got it done in a couple of hours. What's not to love about that? Plus the developers of GlobalComix seem to genuinely care about their community of creators, so I can feel good about belonging to that.
Nice to meet you all!

I think GC is worth it. After Amazon essentially killed Comixology, I've been looking for an alternative.
GC came as a pleasant surprise, catering both to big publishers as well as indie artists. I hope they can make their business model work out and stay ahead of the game without succumbing to bad business practices (both to readers as well as artists!)
At the moment, absolutely worth it. The team is interested in growing the platform (signing DC is a huge step) and hopefully that'll translate into a trickledown to the smaller indie creators.
There is a bit of a looming curiosity around getting too swamped with AAA comics that the indies will be snuffed into complete obscurity, but that's a long term worry.
