Fresh Friday Features: The Odd Ones

ArtCrumbs Featured Comics • Aug 2, 2024

The oddballs of life get the center stage in today's Fresh Friday Features. From a once-human slime at an all-human high school to the stranger who appears one day in a quiet village, there's always that one person in every group. Life is full of strange people, and that can make for some very bizarre stories!

This week, @ArtCrumbs picked:

  • Comic - When the Blood Has Dried: Meabh has taken over as proprietor of The Lough Inn, finding a semblance of peace after a lifetime of adventuring…however, the proposed opening of a branch of the Adventurers’ Guild risks dragging her past into the present.
  • Graphic Novel - The Cult of Pizza: Two pizzeria employees and an ancient vampire fight monsters and supernatural evil to a retro-Noir backdrop
  • Manga - Battle Spirits Saga -Phantasm's End-: The Medeuk army ferociously attacked the Realm of Flame with the first rain of Soul Cores. After defeating the hero Siegwurm Nova, what were they plotting behind the scenes of history?
  • Webcomic - Life Of A Highschool Slime: Eric's just a normal high schooler, going through the motions of what life has to offer. He also happens to have been turned into a ball of slime.

When the Blood Has Dried, 121 pages - Published by Mad Cave Studios, (cc/ @chrisfernandez)

Years ago, a stranger came to Carraig an Bhun, a little town on the edge of the Southern Territories. The locals eventually came to see this “blow-in,” Meabh of Cklonia, as one of their own. Now, Meabh has taken over as proprietor of The Lough Inn, finding a semblance of peace after a lifetime of adventuring…however, the proposed opening of a branch of the Adventurers’ Guild risks dragging her past into the present. What would the townsfolk do if they discovered their beloved barkeep was once part of a ruthless band of rogue sell-swords masquerading as noble heroes? It’s a tragic tale of loss and redemption that asks what’s left behind long after the bodies are buried and When the Blood Has Dried.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

Bards, Elves, card players, and “freelance adventurers”, Beautiful artwork that isn't afraid to have large areas of black, one of my favorite art styles to be honest. The story comes with a short prologue and then we dive into the present time. As a former bartender, I definitely relate to our hero managing all her troublesome and favorite regulars too! I'm really stoked to learn more about her past that's coming back to haunt her! Make sure to add this one to your pull list!

The Cult of Pizza, 24 pages - Published by The Cult of Pizza, (cc/ @jproctor)

"Two pizzeria employees and an ancient vampire fight monsters and supernatural evil to a retro-Noir backdrop, while also trying to stop a pizza cult from raising and harnessing an inter-dimensional evil."

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

This is easily one of the strangest comics I've seen on the platform in terms of style and paneling. The controlled chaos of the artwork blends well with the approach to paneling, which lends itself to more free-form than a dedicated structure. With the wild and colorful graffiti art work, it works great and doesn't stifle the flow of the story at all. I can only imagine how much time this took, and can only wish I had a supernatural pizza-shop in my neighborhood. For all you E.A.Poe fans, you might enjoy this!

Battle Spirits Saga -Phantasm's End-, 29 pages - Published by Bandai Card Games, (cc/ @BandaiCardGames)

The Medeuk army ferociously attacked the Realm of Flame with the first rain of Soul Cores. After defeating the hero Siegwurm Nova, what were they plotting behind the scenes of history? Let's review the story of Battle Spirits Saga, including that which couldn't be fully described in the flavor text, from a different point of view!

A fascinating twist on the classic card game lore. I always love seeing a familiar story from a fresh new perspective. If you're a fan of the card game, you should definitely check out the manga!

Life Of A Highschool Slime, 1204 pages - Published by Goggle Geek, (cc/ @GoggleGeek)

Adorable, funny, and strangely relatable! As someone who was always "The New Kid" I could appreciate the struggles of Eric in one way, though I was never a slime! I love all the antics he and his friends get into and the creative way his life as a slime is utilized. It feel very natural and not contrived or forced. It's a very cute comic!
