What do you think is missing in comics?

Regardless of what comics you've read or how long you've been reading them, what would you say is something that comics are missing? Is there something you want to see that hasn't been showcased in any of the ones you've read? Is there something you think comics would do better by having? Is there something that a comic doesn't have that's preventing you from liking it?

What do you want to see?

Wow! Big question. Hard to answer. What's missing for one will be too much for another. So much depends on age group and genre. For me, not enough adult mature content. Content, say like the old pulp fiction stories. They could be rewritten to fit in present day, even futuristic times and make great entertainment. I don't mean plagiarize them. Do similar with similar themes. Is there a market for such a thing? IDK! I'll let you know in a few year's time, maybe.

That would be interesting. I could see something like that being attempted, though with quite a bit of modernization. I think to make it work successfully in the modern day, one may need to have contemporary themes while still having fantastical elements, and the sophistication of literative writing with the more tasteful components of modern storytelling. I think a bigger focus on complexity with nuanced characterization and overarching narratives would do a lot for current audiences.

I agree with that. There's plenty of scope for experimentation. Experimentation is where tomorrow comes from. Popular genres today seem to be very much overdone. To me, even the characters all look the same. A kind of neutral anime style humanoid. Sometimes hard to tell boy from girl. Oh well, popular sells. Why not?

Here's a comic/creator on here https://globalcomix.com/c/titanomaquia/chapters/en/1/1 who's into experimentation. Found him on Reddit. Scroll to the end, last page, he puts up an explanation of where he's coming from. Good work I think.

BTW, can anyone tell me how I can follow people on here? I can't work that out yet. Call me stupid - nicely please.

Disregard the "follow" question above. I just found it.

Buzz in the low-middle and middle of the comic range. Right now popularity and supply looks like an hourglass. At the top you've got your big titles and publishers; fine, they're going to occupy that space anyways. At the bottom you have your supply high point and development pool.

At the top we're seeing a pretty high barrier to entry, probably as it should be since the demands for consistency and quality are high - those publishers at the top aren't ****ing around, they can't afford to, and those companies will naturally be defensive of territory they think is theirs. However, that pushes the top end wide point of the hourglass a little further down.

I'd like to see the widening of the middle of that hourglass. No idea how it happens, but - much like the music industry's changes in the mid-late 00's - as the production barriers decrease and the scope of who can publish widens, it'd be great for that support for the indie middle to follow.

Don't think there's anything I'd specifically like to see, other than the specific niches I like getting some more people passionated about these niches making comics about it. :P

I feel like we're in the era where the hypersaturation of the market also means there's always something for everyone most of the time, except that you might won't have an easy time finding it if it were to be something that's inbetween top spec and meh spec, or if it's a self-published (marketing is an entire separate workload™). Seconding HCE's post above.
