The REAL Reason Superhero Movies Don't Work Long Term
I know this is my hot take, but I think the number one reason Superhero Movies go bad isn't because of fatigue, but because Superhero tales are too long and detailed to be compressed into one movie at a time and work better as long form TV shows. And I think that is a plus.
Not just because you get to tell the story properly, but there are actually a lot of great job opportunities and artistic paths you can take in a TV show that you just don't get in a film. TV shows make develop a personal relationship with the characters and their world.
You get that with a film too, but not as personally or as deep as you do with a show. I mean, look at how deeply we fell in love with Ashoka Tano thanks to going on her long detailed journey with her. It's ok to take your time in telling a story. That is an art form too.
Let's not forget how many times they rebooted superhero movies like Batman and Superman, even giving the franchise to directors with different story-telling directions. We see this hot mess a lot in DC movies.
As for Marvel movies/series, I don't know what to make of it. So many flops in 2023 save for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 03.
Honestly, I hope Hollywood goes back to comedy movies and sci-fi horrors. I miss the good old times.
Or R rated movies we could take seriously. Honestly, the best superhero media I have seen in my life other than comics were TV shows for the reasons you say. A movie is just too short to tell a hero's story. A series is malleable and allows you to take your time. Plus, you don't need reboots because you can use new ideas in the same world at the right time.
I think another issue is that the conflict has to be believable and feel real to the audience, but a lot of the recent movies have had conflicts that I think are really stupid. Like the whole 'if we don't fix the time line all of the multiverse will unravel' thing just feels made up and dumb and it's not a conflict I can really get behind
Tell me about it. The Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies had struggles that were extremely relatable such as forgiving yourself and others or feeling conflicted between desire and responsibility. And then there was the whole Avengers Civil War which hits a very relatable nerve at how a serious difference of ideologies can sour even the best friendships. It honestly broke my heart to see Cap and Iron Man at odds.
The public gets tired of any genre if they see it too much. think back to long ago there were westerns, musicals, gangster movies, big budget action films with the lone cop, slasher films and slowly they disappeared and reappeared sporadically. superhero stories in comics usually are one comic long we get character development over the course of the series but a lot of marvel films have the one movie origin and do a good job without needing 8 to 10 one hour long episodes. look at the guardians of the galaxy 1 or the first ironman.
@jhargrove You can a point. In other words, it's not "superhero fatigue". Just fatigue. Not even the most passionate fans like too much of something.
