ArtCrumbs Featured Comics • Aug 16, 2024

Life can seem bleak, but today's Fresh Friday Features offers lights among a sea of darkness. These comics will uplift you spirit, fighting against evil and negativity with weapons of humor, love, and child-like wonder.

This week, @ArtCrumbs picked:

  • Comic - 1 AND A HALF: After accepting his master's "Eternal Gift", Sebastian became the living nightmare every child and pregnant woman is afraid of.
  • Comic - Buni: The twisted and side-splitting hilarity of Buni! Always positive, Buni doesn’t understand that the cute world he lives in is usually out to get him.
  • Comic - Lore:  A girl named Charlene gets invited to the adventurer clan's exam. Her mother was a great adventurer, but she got murdered in cold blood by a mysterious individual.
  • Comic - Heck: follows the adventures of four tweens as they’re whisked to the past through their middle school library’s yearbook collection. Hollis Burncoat, Erin Bailey, William Durand and Snoozy Simmons solve mysteries and see familiar figures in their lives in a whole new light.

1 AND A HALF, 16 pages - Published by this.is.ALiCE.draws, (cc/ @this-is-ALiCE-draws)

"FEAST ONLY ON ME." . . . . After accepting his master's "Eternal Gift", Sebastian became the living nightmare every child and pregnant woman is afraid of. This out-of-control creature fights valiantly to maintain his human sanity while being hungry and demented until he lands at the mercy of a striving college student, Kiko, who comes from a line of hunters of night creatures like him.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

A supernatural being doing their best to do good is admirable. I'm a sucker for good supernatural stories, especially those focusing on redemption. I love the set-up so far, and I'm excited to learn more about these characters.

Buni, 129 pages - Published by Andrews McMeel Publishing, (cc/ @GCpartnerships)

What do you get when you throw an incessantly optimistic bunny into a dark, antagonistic world? The twisted and side-splitting hilarity of Buni! Always positive, Buni doesn’t understand that the cute world he lives in is usually out to get him. The girl he loves loves someone else. And his best intentions never seem to work. Yet he wakes up each day hopeful. Together with his cynical dad and determined dog, he inhabits a surreal world populated by teddy bears, cupcakes, unicorns, and zombies. With few words, these comics rely on images to tell the story, which is often twisted, sad and funny all at the same time. But more than anything, they show that nothing will keep Buni down. Because true happiness is a state of mind.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

The perfect blend of wholesome and dark humor! Ever the optimist, Buni is so inspiring with how he handles all the darkness sent his way by life. Life might be messed up, but it doesn't have to get you down.

Lore, 96 pages - Published by Image Comics, (cc/ @GCpartnerships)

“We thought because we had power, we had wisdom.“ Re-presenting ASHLEY WOOD and T.P. LOUISE’s LORE in three deluxe, extra-length, and fully relettered issues. In LORE, Jennifer Bradley’s journey to solve the mystery of her father’s death grows increasingly bizarre as what she discovers threatens not just her existence, but the entirety of modern society, too.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

The art style of this, switching from almost a photo-painted imagery and inky illustrations. A spooky story with the hope of solving a mystery, Jennifer's search is rewarding in the end.

Heck, 28 pages - Published by Ace's Art Gallery, (cc/ @Blue-Beetle-IV)

The world is wacky, weird, and most importantly - horrific! Ezra Barragan was living an average life until one fateful Halloween he stumbled upon a cursed costume made from the skin of an archdemon! From them on Ezra roams the night as the horrifying Heck! But enough of that! Take your first foray into a world of splendid scares in this introductory short story! Just what is the Hellpuppy, and how will Heck confront it?

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

Making the most of a bad situation is something Ezra is all too familiar with. Halloween is definitely the best holiday of the bunch, so I agree with Ezra on that one. It's all fun and games until you get stuck with an archdemon skin on you.
