Abbott: 1979, 111 pages - Published by BOOM! Studios, (cc/ @GCpartnerships)
On the eve of the 1980s and the Reagan Administration, Detroit is burdened with an oppressive darkness–both political and supernatural. Dejected and tough tabloid reporter Elena Abbott, who previously defeated the occult forces responsible for her husband’s death, must dig herself out from rock bottom if she’s going to save Detroit from the Umbra, one last time... As the next chapter by Hugo Award-nominated novelist Saladin Ahmed (Star Wars: Canto Bight, Black Bolt) and artist Sami ...

Losing a family member is hard, but what about losing your friends? I love the gritty nature of this leading lady! It's not super common to come across a "true grit" female lead. I love her personality, I love how, despite her flaws, she's still clearly our protagonist. Can we have more like her please? Lettering on point, to be expected with Jim Campbell. Colors are so vibrant when needed and muted when it fits. Great work team!
ACTS ONE NINE, 279 pages - Published by Pibis Island and Co, (cc/ @pibis)
To Riley Vondrasek, getting away with anything is easy. Kill. Eat what you kill. Run from the authorities before they even have a chance to catch up. This has been his life for the last several years. Until he arrives at New York. A concrete jungle like this is vast and unruly, a perfect playground for an eager serial killer. Except, this concrete jungle contains another predator, one who's not willing to share their prey so easily.

Spicy from start! A fallen angel condemned to Earth and certainly an interesting spin on an anti-hero lead character. I'm curious to see how far is depravity will go, seeing how it's starting to spiral out of his control. Just about every type of "sin" that's possible is at play here. I love the muted greyscale palette with only occasional color, makes it impactful when it does show up. I wonder how far Ripley can fall?
SWIP SWOP, 189 pages - Published by SWIP SWOP, (cc/ @SwipSwopTeam)
The bustling metropolis called Yakusoku, known to many as the "City of Promise," is filled with chaos and mischief. Gang warfare, government corruption, and the supernatural all run rampant across this plagued community. In the midst of it all, a rabbit loving bounty hunter, a young billionaire, a normal high school student, and those aligned with them will have their lives intertwined whether it's by choice or by chance. There will be people to meet, battles to fight and mysteries to solve. Or if you just wanna hang out, that's cool too. We hope you enjoy your stay. And you've been warned....

Rabbits and robbers, not what I would usually expect to start out a manga! A wonderful cast of characters so far, relatable, interesting character designs too! I love the use of an animal motif that isn't typically associated with strength or intimidation. The artwork is also very nice and clean, especially the intro and cover. A bounty hunter bunny-boy is definitely not something I've ever heard or thought of. I have high hopes for this one!
Supercat, 91 pages - Published by Soul the souleater, (cc/ @Soulthesouleater)
After a long slumber, Lexus was awakened by a demigod, Xato. Lexus has gained a "gift" but can't remember what happened to her. Whether she will find out the truth or something is shrouding her family's dark past. Will she be able to find out, or will she use her "gift" to search out the answers? *Update every sunday!* This series has 6 genres: Mystery, supernatural, urban fantasy, thriller, romance and drama.

I would not have been so calm if a giant face with three eyes greeted me, anyone else? I'm LOVING the supporting cast here, Chris and Otto have fantastic designs. I think Chris is my favorite, really out-there design with a cute personality! There's so much bizzare-ness going on here, though it's not confusing in any way. It's intriguing and makes me look forward to what other strange and weird characters, and powers, we'll run into! Otto's cooking is GOALS, which I could cook like that...
That's all for now, but we'll have another set of Fresh Friday reading recommendations next week. You can also browse through our Featured Comics news section and add them to your Library for future reading!
