Recommended Reading for Pride Month 2025

ArtCrumbs Community • Jun 10, 2025

Pride Month 2025 is here, and today we've highlighted some critical and impactful LGBTQ+ comics that you should be reading and why we recommend them. Whether it's about Queer history, a controversial title being challenged in libraries across the United States, or a whole collection of tales, we've got a list you'll love.

1. Gender Queer - Oni Press

In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Then e created Gender Queer. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to family and society, bonding with friends over erotic gay fan fiction, and facing the trauma and fundamental violation of pap smears. Started as a way to explain to eir family what it means to be nonbinary and asexual, Gender Queer is more than a personal story: It is a useful and touching guide on gender identity.

In recent years, LGBTQ-themed books have made up over 25% of all banned or challenged titles, raising concern about access for the teens and young adults these stories are meant to support, especially in today's political climate. Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe, published by Oni Press in 2019, has become one of the most frequently banned book in the U.S. for three consecutive years. This graphic memoir chronicles Kobabe’s journey of gender identity and self-discovery, offering an honest, relatable perspective for young readers navigating similar experiences. However, its bold approach to controversial topics has made it a frequent target of censorship, often driven by anti-LGBTQ groups like “Moms for Liberty.”

Reading Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe during Pride Month offers a powerful opportunity for self-discovery and empathy. As a Non-Binary Trans person myself, it was comforting to see someone go through a journey I saw similarity in. For LGBTQ+ people, especially those currently exploring gender identity, it can be deeply affirming to see someone else's journey reflected on the page. Growing up nonbinary and asexual can feel isolating and vulnerable, and I hope that readers can feel seen and understood.

For those outside the LGBTQ+ community, Gender Queer provides a valuable window into experiences different from their own. It promotes empathy and awareness by exploring personal struggles with identity, pronouns, body dysphoria, and societal expectations. It's a wonderful way to educate yourself and create a stronger understanding as an ally.
