Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

What I really loved about all of these stories is they didn't make the answers so clear and obvious right away. I love a good twist and surprise in my stories, and none of these disappointed me! I think my favorite one was the mermaid story. It started out so wholesome, how could you do this to me, the reader?

Each story has a very distinct 'lesson' and art to match. If you love short stories that aren't super complex and perfect for curling up under a blanket, these are the stories for you! I hope there is a second installment someday! Great work team!

Uriko, 33 pages - Published by Neridacomic, (cc/ @neridacomic)

Uriko follows the exploits of a young vampire hunter as he trys in vain to catch the vampire who has his sister under her sway. A sweeping epic spanning 500 years from the Mongol hordes to the beginning of the industrial revolution, Uriko is a five part comic mini series suppliment to the novel of the same name written and drawn by David Luján.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

An evil vampire story spanning centuries?! Sign me up! Life isn't easy and it's a struggle not to get swept up in the chaos of evil ones. They lurk waiting to snatch up poor unfortunate souls and keep them indebted to their blood-stained hands. The graphic novel's art style was really well done, gritty with the black and white look.

Also, the fingerprint like texture in the background was crazy creative and I'm living for it! I actually want to try to apply it to some of my own manga. I'm really curious to see what other fun artwork we'll see from David. Amazing work!

A Midnight Opera, 555 pages - Published by TOKYOPOP, (cc/ @GCpartnerships)

The Order, under the draconian leadership of Cardinal LaCroix, closes in on Paris to exterminate the undead, and with them is the powerful lunatic Peter Stubbe. But a link between LaCroix and the Brothers DeLaLune might have a deeper effect on the outcome of the looming battle than the scores of soldiers on both sides ready to fight. Elizabeth and Leroux have a lot to talk about, and now that Dahlia knows Ein's secret, will she still love him?

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

Undead brothers and a love story bouncing between the Dark Ages and Modern times. This is a manga I've always wanted to read and had heard so much about. Vampires, werewolves, Frankenstein, and... rockstars?! Reading this gave me hints of Phantom of the Opera, mixing and mashing all kinds of monsters and music together. I love a good antihero or a brooding hero type, and this one was fun. The artwork is just as sharp as the fangs of monsters. Lots of highly detailed and high contrast art, my favorite! A classic manga from an earlier time, thanks Tokyopop and Hans!

Necrodandy, 119 pages - Published by Yaxsha, (cc/ @Yaxsha)

After she accidentally frees a 300 year old zombie, a goth girl named Maggie finds herself surrounded by needy monsters and spirits. Reluctantly, she starts a secret club to protect them, along with helping her undead friend get revenge on his murderer and return home.

Comments from @ArtCrumbs:

Poor Kafka had it all and paid the ultimate price for their success. What a wild story that I was not ready for. Now that I'm knee-deep in it, I'm so invested to see if Kafka can get the revenge he so desires! I'm also curious to see what other creatures Maggie gets to interact with. It's a wild ride so early in the beginning. Definitely sit down with a support blanket for this one. Great work, Yaxsha!

That's all for now, but we'll have another set of Fresh Friday reading recommendations next week. You can also browse through our Featured Comics news section!
