God is hungry

The story opens with the BELL FAMILY riding their worn out wagon on a muddy trail. They are poor African-American sharecroppers in 1873. JOSEPH BELL drives the horses while RUTH BELL holds the rifle. Their children, 12-year-old MAY and seven-year-old SIMON, ride in the back. The Bells are looking for a spiritual cure for their daughter, who has symptoms of autism, hardly speaks, and is plagued by visions of “the devil.” They find THE RIDDLES, a mysterious family who stay hidden away in a cabin on the outskirts of town. An ancient rune is carved into the trees and on the cabin itself. The Riddles - ARTOR, KATE, and something that is more animal than child that is kept locked away in another room, VICTOR. May is startled when she sees him peering through the keyhole. The Riddles invite the Belles inside for dinner, and May watches as her parents are murdered. Artor then releases Victor, who drags little Simon away, and there is silence. May escapes into the woods, and Victor chases her down. He attacks, knocks her unconscious, and takes her back to the cabin. When May opens her eyes, she is greeted by the grinning faces of her dead family.
