The Inspiring Journey of Canada-Based SK6

Kevin Community • Jun 27, 2023

GlobalComix is excited to continue our Creator Stories series with a guest article by Ash Kohari and Vice, collectively known as SK6. They joined GlobalComix last year, first publishing 9mm Girls, and more recently Indocilis Alchimia.

With 9mm Girls consistently among the most popular and trending titles on GlobalComix, we wanted to give the duo an opportunity to share their story. I now turn things over to SK6 for the rest of the article.

We are SK6, an artist couple consisting of Vice and Ash, currently residing in Canada.

Our journey began back in 2018 when we decided to change our name from Chili Ferrets, the collective name we used in 2014 that focused on fan art and the latest trends.

However, we soon realized that we wanted to pursue 100% personal projects. It wasn't an easy decision, as following trends is often an effective way to gain attention, but we had ideas of our own that we wanted to explore.

The following year, I, Ash, started my first webcomic called "Black City Birds," a supernatural tale about creatures trying to navigate the ordinary world. Vice also began her own webcomic titled "Moving In," which portrayed a lighthearted story about a girl falling in love with her neighbor.

Both of these comics were initially published on tapas.io (formerly Tapastic). It was challenging at first since we were both working full-time jobs in the animation industry. Our days were filled with drawing from 9 to 6, and then we would come home and continue drawing. Slowly but surely, we developed a routine. If you were to ask us now if we could stop, the answer would most likely be a resounding "no."

As time went on, we created another webcomic called "Girl Love Treats!" This series consisted of short stories focusing on same-sex relationships (also published on tapas.io). For the first time, Vice and I joined forces, alternating between creating each short story comic.

Eventually, I decided to stop my webcomic "Black City Birds" because it was based on an existing intellectual property. I shifted my focus to a project called "KHAMOS," a webcomic set in a post-apocalyptic world where teenagers possessed god-like powers. It was based on an IP from a defunct company called Norigami.

Vice continued working on her webcomic "Moving in," facing numerous challenges such as hiatuses and prolonged periods without publishing. However, the comic recently concluded (just this year, to be precise).

Afterward, we embarked on a long period of trial and error, encountering different stories and companies along the way. We faced failed projects and even had some of our intellectual properties stolen (#comicsbrokeme lol!), but we persevered!

Thus, in June 2018, SK6 was born. We decided to create more original stories while continuing to produce webcomics together. You can find our projects on our website: https://soliko6.crd.co/

Our focus at SK6 revolves around LGBTQ+ content with a range of themes, including comedy, romance, fantasy, and urban fantasy. Our current main titles are "9mm Girls" and "Freaky 1/2."

"9mm Girls" is a manga about two badass girls fighting stylish demons in suits. It's a long-term project that I, Ash, consider my most significant work to date. However, it has been challenging to market to a wider audience due to heavy censorship on platforms like Tapas and being completely removed from Webtoon. Nevertheless, Globalcomix has been a supportive platform.

To expand our horizons, SK6 decided to venture into creating a visual novel-style video game. We have already released a fully playable demo, available for free download on itch.io! You can learn more about the game's universe here: https://9mmgirls.crd.co/

As for Vice, her newest manga is "Freaky 1/2," which follows a group of misfits who are half-breeds and frequently find themselves in trouble. It features a fantasy medieval setting with an LGBTQ+ focus. Since it is still in its early stages, the manga is exclusively available on Patreon and Ko-fi for our supporters.

When it comes to our artistic styles and preferred storytelling, we couldn't be more different. Vice, the creator of "Indocilis Alchimia" and the current artist behind "Freaky 1/2," has a bubbly style and enjoys crafting cute, wholesome stories with a touch of kinkiness.

On the other hand, I, Ash, have an edgy and dark art style that complements the mature and sometimes heavy subjects I explore in my stories. They are not for the faint of heart.

So, how do we sustain ourselves and put food on the table? Vice works as a professional 2D animator, holding a full-time position. Meanwhile, I specialize in 2D background art and also have experience in 2D animation.

Additionally, we have a Patreon for our projects, which assists in the development of the visual novel. You can find it here: https://www.patreon.com/sk6
