Suite à l’incendie de sa maison, Gaïane une jeune Aigues-Mortaise enterre ses parents. En fouillant dans les restes calcinés, elle découvre protégé dans un coffre, leurs travail de recherche archéologique et un vieux grimoire datant du moyen-âge. Dernier souvenir de sa famille, elle se raccroche à ces documents et les lit avec passion.
Gaïane se plonge alors dans l’histoire de cet ouvrage qui raconte la vie d’un jeune garçon appelé Eiquem. Il travaille pour le compte de l’abbaye de Psalmodie dans les marais salant d’Aigues-Mortes où il récolte du sel avec ses amis Melianda et le moine Ebrard. Seul face à la menace d’un groupe de braconniers, il les affronte pour protéger ses proches. Un danger bien minime comparé au destin que les esprits régissant ce monde lui réservent.
