One-shot 1
The Cardboard Crown
Ecuadorian independent comic
The Cardboard Crown is an autopsy of tyrannical populism, cloaked in visceral fantasy. In the plaza of a defeated kingdom, an egomaniacal king—a puppet of a conquering demon—announces the definitive cure for crime, poverty, and plague. The solution is a spell that demands an undeniable sacrifice: a drop of blood and an object that symbolizes the soul of each citizen.
While the streets are stained with the discontent of a people bled dry by armed repression and false promises, the royal conspiracy unfolds in the shadows. When protests erupt, the monarch reveals herself as a coward who obeys a fanatical "Master" who finances her regime in exchange for absolute sovereignty over the territory.
Far from the classic heroic epic, the political opposition does not seek grand battles. They decide not to stop the tyrant, but to let his own illusion consume him and unmask his true nature as a cardboard king, preventing him from becoming a martyr when he is overthrown.
