Welcome to the premiere episode of “Insignificant Otters”, a bit of a play on words for “significant others”. (Yes, we thought it was cute too. ^^) While the concept isn’t exactly original, we still think it could be a smash hit. First off, like we mentioned before, there are no “The Blue Lagoon” rules. Without giving too much away, and as you’ll see, Emma isn’t exactly fond of her erstwhile companion, Kevin. But they’re stuck with each other for the time being. And as the days go by, sanity can begin to warp and twist the mind in certain ways, so you’ll often see breaks from reality. Like we said, we don’t want to give too much away! Just trust us, okay? ♥ A shout-out to master comic artist Jim Jimenez, who made this possible!

Seems this is all Kevin's fault, which would explain Emma's less-than-friendly attitude towards him. *^^* A shout-out to master comic artist Jim Jimenez, who made this possible!

She's not going for it. *^^* Why DO people like to shorten their names? Maybe it's a type of insecurity. Are people not happy with their names, or do they think less of their names, so they try to use less of it? We could have added quite a bit of philosophical banter to this, but we only had four panels. =P But feel free to discuss in comments below!

Castaway Advice: Look for water immediately. In many remote areas of an island are hidden underground “wells” just waiting to be dug up. Select a place near a clump of healthy trees and start digging. It could be 2-3 feet deep, but fresh water’s out there. Be sure to get a fire going too, because you must boil that water down so any bacteria is destroyed! If you’re really lucky, you’ll come across a pool with a waterfall cascading over rocks! This is great because that’s a natural filtration unit, making the water safe to swim in or drink from!

Castaway Advice: Food is obviously a necessity but now’s the time where you really have to be picky. Avoid dead fish and any fruit you might find lying around on the ground. It’s likely infected or rotted somehow. Get your fruit from the trees, especially coconuts. You might have to climb a bit but it’s worth it. Not only will you get something edible and fresh, but you also get a better lay of the land around you, and can locate possible water sources!

Castaway Advice: If you manage to find any kind of structure, even if it’s old and raggedy looking, it’s still shelter. But beware of these old places, for something else may have taken up residence there! One of the first things you should do is urinate or defecate around the area, and spread the waste around. (yes, it’s gross, but do you want a free hut or not?!) This way, incoming animals who were looking to make the hut their home will shy away from your scent.

D&D memories: failing an attack and watching a party member fall to a rampant crossbow. Ah, so many memories. Got any you’d like to share? Leave a comment! ♥ Castaway Advice: There’s no telling what you’ll find in an empty structure, especially if it’s seen a lot of wear and tear. There could be viruses, animal feces that can lead to severe health problems, and other horrors. If you do happen across a structure like this, use common sense. It’s probably not for you and you have no really viable way to fumigate.

Castaway Advice: If an angry animal should come charging out of the place you’ve discovered, DO NOT RUN. Instead, stand your ground, yell as loud as you possibly can, using a low voice if possible. It should be enough to throw the animal off the game plan and become afraid of YOU. Once it’s gone however, get out of there fast. It will likely come back, and in greater numbers.

9: A Lack of EXP

Castaway Advice: If you’re sure no animals have already adopted your new hut as a home, time to scout the area around it. You’ll want to designate areas for cooking, the call of nature, the best places for shade, etc. And for goodness sakes, GET SOME WATER first and foremost. Dig into nearby trees and look for water you can cook away bacteria from. Don’t have a pot to cook in? Find a big rock with a hole in it, make yourself a fire and plop the rock into it. Once the water starts bubbling out, it should be safe for drinking.

Yeah, okay, okay. We all saw that coming… *^^* Castaway Advice: Bamboo is quite likely your best friend on a deserted island. Not only can you eat the shoots, (provided you prepare them carefully, as they contain a toxin that acts like cyanide. Eep!), but you also create traps and weapons with them, make certain types of construction from the branches and shoots, or create very strong bamboo silks for sewing and to help with binding. If you’re surrounded by bamboo let’s just say that your situation is not bad at all. You’ve got the “Swiss Army knife” of plants ready for your enjoyment. ♥

Well, alright, maybe Emma didn't quite think this through. Advantage, Kevin! ♥ Castaway Advice: Is it really a good idea to have openings in the hut where insects and other creepies can get through? Actually, yeah, it's very important. If your hut faces the open sea, especially, because you want that ocean breeze coming off the water and coming inside. It's going to not only help cool you off, but surprisingly the breeze also helps nourish you, because it carries moisture, which your body will certainly need. So, by all means, knock some holes into that thing!
