Ryujin has been waiting weeks for his father to come home. He is five. He does not understand why his mother cries at night, or why the house feels quieter than it used to. All he knows is that Papa promised — and Papa always keeps his promises. So when a messenger arrives on his birthday and drops a katana at his mother's feet, Ryujin does not see grief.
