Oliver Harrison was a mythical hero who slayed the greatest threat to his realm before even hitting puberty. But that was then.
As an adult, Oliver leads an average cookie-cutter suburban life—aside from the fact that he’s mentally unstable, massively paranoid, smokes like a chimney, and gets blackout drunk every night to hide from his horrific nightmares. Will the arrival of a superhero team called the Prestige prove the madness isn’t all in Oliver’s head? And what about all the ...
Members of superhero group The Prestige continue to attack Oliver Harrison as his sanity and sobriety hang in the balance. While Oliver’s power grows and he holds his ground, we gain vital insight into the mystic realm of Everkeep and evil Baron Vanish’s past…and future? From DONNY CATES (GOD COUNTRY, Hulk, Thor), RYAN STEGMAN (VENOM, King in Black), JP MAYER (Absolute Carnage, Fantastic Four), SONIA OBACK (Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows, Han Solo), and JOHN J. damn what a downer ending. he'd rather have an evil dude in his head than be with his wife? laaaame. If the wife knows the devil put a curse on him as a child, why does she just accept his fate as a crack-addicted spawn cosplayin stalker? and what's the point of a plot-centric creator owned book with fill-in artists? kind of a disappointment from vol 1 honestly. So if Battle-Rocket never jumped in that alley to help none of this would've happened, that's hilarious. those muggers shouldve tried to rob his house so his wife could toad-ify them.
Also that scene where she tells him he peaked made me laugh out loud like 🤣damn. why did they pull this man's pants down like that? Why would deacon take that deal too, man? he already died for the dude, and that devil was awful. Lots of character decisions just don't click for me. Vol 1 is like Wow! here's this cool character! Then 2 is like no he's a drug addicted dead beat freak. like holy shit 😅
I feel like this book's premise is too bloated and confused for its length. The Hero is morbidly depressed Harry Potter through whom the author examines mental illness by having him work against his own interests and question his own nature. That works. I genuinely felt for him when his wife dressed him down, shamed his identity, and he was left begging for help. That said, I think the superhero angle for his enemies is an obstacle for the story. What little things we learned about The Hollow was all in the Fantasy past. No one was convinced those guys had changed for the better. That whole aspect is basically irrelevant once Not-Superman drops the disguise for the final battle, it didn't really mean anything. Maybe they should've stayed with the urban fantasy theme without superheroes so there wouldn't be so much to explain.
anyway ok book. vol 1 is much better than the continuation. Its enjoyable similar to Cates and Stegman on Venom, with that same dark cool atmosphere. The feeling is brief though, Stegman doesn't draw a lot of vol 2 and at the end of it none of the characters even made sense to me.
