The way Tynion paints the dad as self absorbed is a master stroke. Using the other character's reactions to the dad to show his ignorance and ineptitude at being a good husband and father. And the child's monster makes us feel the dysfunction in a primal way. It is a kind of horror to be disconnected from your parent when they are right there in front of you.
