Synopsis…Feast your eyes on Zombie Date Night. A 32-page comic book that tells the story of: Boy matches with girl. Girl meets up with boy for a first date. Boy and girl face a ZOMBIE INVASION!
Thoughts…This comic gave me the vibe of a 90s teen tv show, it's the setting and scenario I think that does it. It has them all at the mall, a group of misfit friends all giving each other grief and taking the mickey. It has a sort of sitcom feel to it, for some reason it gives me a Fresh Prince meets Buffy all set in the world of Dead Rising, an old Xbox game (zombies in a mall, great game).
The story of boy meets girl is as old as time and there is normally something that messes that first date up, well this time it's something apocalyptic. The story builds nicely as we get introduced to our cast of characters and get a glimpse of the world they live in. I won’t spoil the outcome of the date, but let's say a zombie attack might be just what was needed to spice things up. When everything kicks off we are settled in with everyone and that leaves us to enjoy the carnage as it unfolds. And what carnage it is, who will survive the first night of the living dead…
The art style is great for this style of zombie story, its light and cartoony which compliments the humour to the story. There are some really cool panels throughout the issue and there are some great zombie designs along the way as well.
The whole book has a great humour to it, and there are some great zingers throughout. There are also some interesting mysteries set up as well, where did the zombies come from ? Will there be a second date? What is up with Ginger? I really like this first issue, it has the Steve Urena humour of Slow Pokes and Foul Mouth. I would give this a 7 out of 10.
