Thoughts…..
There are two stories within this first issue and both were engaging and well written. The main story that was in comic form entitled Prey, introduced us to Jessica Steele and gave us an insight into the world the story is set in. There is a familiar feel to the setting as it seems to pull inspiration existing from sci-fi genre projects but put its own take on the established and give us something brand new. This first chapter clearly sets out the character of Jessica Steele and we get a good look at her motivations and her capabilities, she has a mission and she has the skills to pull it off. With the setup of the back story we also get the villain of the piece revealed and the starting point of what looks like a galactic civil war. While this Dark Legacy Universe is being created on the pages we also get an exciting story to get our teeth into. What starts off as a murder investigation soon becomes something much bigger and potentially leads to more with the mysterious allies that appear as this part of the issue comes to a close.
Then in And Hell Followed Him, a text based story we are introduced to Marshall Jake Reeves, no nonsense, tough as nails peacekeeper of Devil’s Ridge. While using his own persuasive ways of interrogation he is drawn into an investigation with a familiar face, Major Jessica Steele. Their interests align and they set out into the outer edge of the martian colony to mutant territory. I found this story to be as equally entertaining as the comic form story and was gutted when I got to the to be continued break in the story, but to my relief it continued on later in the issue.
The contrast in both the setting and the way the stories were told worked really well, both gritty and intriguing in their own way. I felt more drawn to the text story which surprised me but I really like both of them. I am hoping that issue 2 will continue both of these adventures as I need to know what happens to both Steele and Reeves. This is a solid start to a new story and comic book universe, it already has a lot of depth and room to expand out further. I would give this a big 8 out of 10 overall, the stories have hooked me and that is exactly what a first is meant to do, and this has more than done its job in that regard….bring on issue 2
