Kaito knows better than most that his life could end at any moment if not for the protection that comes from being at Akihiko’s side. He’s fully aware he only survives because he’s useful to the daimyo’s son, yet he’s content enough living in the comforts of Edo. That pleasant life ends the moment a summons arrives from Gyoganseki Province, calling Akihiko home to take up his father’s title. Kaito feels the mountains of Gyoganseki press in from every side, and it doesn’t take long for Kaito to notice that Akihiko is not quite himself, insisting that something out there is calling to him. Almost like something is swimming in the shadows. Kaito can’t shake the thought that a threat is already inside the castle walls. And if he hopes to keep Akihiko safe and keep himself alive he’ll have to find whatever is lurking in the dark before it decides to step forward.
