Episode 1
My Identity
Have you ever had an identity crisis? My first summer traveling and teaching was one of my most prominent moments in which who I was made little to no sense to me. Luckily, I made friends with Altman as he and I taught for two weeks. At the end of our two weeks, we decided to cut a rug and party. Perhaps I partied too hard.
Episode 2
The Soup
What's better than soup? Okay, probably anything, if you don't crave soup. But I like soup well enough.
As a kid, my sister and I would be permitted to eat a meal or two a week in front of the TV, as long as it was downstair and together. We were hooked on Disney programs like So Weird, and we took advantage of the TV time. On one fateful day, however, my soupy desires got the best of me.
Episode 3
Corn Cob Man
Do you have that friend who seems to be so relentlessly following his or her own path that you're sure they've gotta be an alien, or living a double life? I know it has to be true with this dude. I'll never forget the impact he had on me as I sat at a job that I appreciated, but knew I had to move on from. He dropped in once or twice and made me feel as though I could crash through ceilings too.
Episode 4
The Flat Tire
Last summer, in the blistering July heat, I traveled to my first artist residency in Gregory, SD. That's basically nowhere. To make things better, I had a trunk full of brand new Champions Comics. Suddenly, a flat tire stole my evening. As soon as help came, well, you know.
Episode 5
Re-Laxatives
I've gone through a great deal of dieting. And I'll be transparent, it wrecked my metabolism as well as other bodily functions. Sometimes I need a little help... working it out. And some of those early days, I got more help than I needed. What could be more embarrassing at work?
Episode 6
Going Cruisin
You may not believe it, but at one point gas in the US was under $2. My pal Jory and I would spend countless hours driving around town. It's a staple of Midwest living, ya know. I can't believe how far we'd drive on such little cash!
What've you bought with change beneath the seat?
(Also, I started inking with a better brush :D)
Episode 7
Bugged Out
I've recently announced the launch of my next comic book, Champions Issue 2. Today's comic holds personal symbolism, but also fits the feeling of being swarmed by those asking for the next issue. Now, I'm excited to announce that the issue hits shelves on Friday, September 15th! What swarms all over you?
Episode 8
Beer & Pizza
Minutes after knowing your identity, you'll likely identify your needs. I needed pizza. NEEDED PIZZA. The celebratory craze was not met. Rather, I was taken care of by one of the best friends a rabbit monster could ask for. What do you need when you've had one too many?
Episode 9
Down, Down, Down
This was one of the character tests I had done when working out my alter ego as a bunny monster. I hope you enjoy it. Next week I'll be starting something rhythmic with this series. It won't be an ongoing arc, rather an ongoing theme. I can't wait for you to see it!
Oh! And have an awesome Labor Day! How do you plan to spend the holiday?
Episode 10
Bitter Sweet Saga
This comic was inspired by a series I ran on Patreon called the Good Fight. It's time I finally revisit those roots. Life can be hard, and our struggles are unique. But we're all in this together. So let' not give up together. How do you fight the good fight?
Episode 11
The Bitter Sweet Egg
Have you ever just worked tirelessly on something, only for it to explode in your face? If you can think back to the fantastical world of 2009, I had just that happen. After a successful project creating three foot tall aliens, I went onto another alien project. However, this giant egg sac blew to smithereens. 30 pounds of gelatin. 20 hours welding. Ruined. On the hard wood floor.
Episode 12
Oh Sweet VÃ¥ffeldagen
I must have been missing waffles lately. Because one of the best days of the year is VÃ¥ffeldagen (March 25th). I discovered this Swedish holiday a few years ago. And I fondly remember it happening exactly this way when Mike and I devoted our meals to waffles. Waffles with various syrups. Waffles with whipped cream and spices. Waffles with apples and bacon. What other sweet food deserves its day?
Episode 13
Beverly on the Bitter Sweet Road
Lately, I've been on the road. My fiancée and I have been touring Iowa, looking for a wedding venue. To top it off, I'm delivering brand new issues of my print series, Champions, to more stores. But I didn't want to leave you high and dry, the way my car might. Boy do I have trouble with that old clunker. What joys can a car really bring?
Episode 14
Sweet, Sweet Strangers
I guess I'm missing the fun of having a stranger text me. But let's face it, I think it's a blast to chat with the randos who text me on accident. It's always a fun chain of oddities before they ultimately break-up with me forever. How else are you supposed to act when you get a random text?
Episode 15
Ode to the Bitter Sweet Road
Ever since debuting a comic, I've been one avid road dweller. Suitcases, hotel rooms, school classrooms, event centers, and signing. It's exactly what I signed up for. It's a lifestyle that affords me to work on my storytelling goals, for sure. But it doesn't come without it's difficulties. Hey! We all have our struggles. What makes your career challenging?
Episode 16
The Sweet Pumpkin Patch (Sketch!)
It's been a wildly busy October. Bustling around from residency to signings, while trying to pump out this comic and Champions. Yet my fiancée and I managed to buy a huge pumpkin. I'm not particularly strong, but I have an affinity for the bigger pumpkins. It's just so heavy! We carved it classically. What are you carving in your pumpkins this Halloween?
Episode 17
The Bitter Natural One
Throughout the course of a month, I play in three different roleplaying games, Dungeons and Dragons, Dark Heresy, and Pokemon Tabletop United. Unfortunately, some weeks I just can't catch a break as my rolls go completely down the drain, my stats are just sub-par, or I came in ill-prepared. But I still love it so very much.
Episode 18
Sweet Thanksgiving Dinner
Last week I had a blast sharing a bit of my roleplaying experience. Because of that, I thought it only appropriate to repeat the process. Since it's Thanksgiving week, I hope you can enjoy this rendition of our D&D party enjoying a pig on our journey through the wild.
Episode 19
When the Bitter Dice Fall
Okay, so I've been on a D&D kick. Which is fun! Today I turn the table. Sometimes I run the game, and even then I still drop natural ones like they're going outta style. But doesn't that make for better heroic gameplay?
Episode 20
Sweet..? Recognition
It's kind of nuts knowing I've finished two years of artist residencies now. But It's rewarding. I'm not sure I'll ever get used to everyone knowing who I am though. What never settles to normalcy for you?
Episode 21
Bitter Tyranny
It's another roleplaying episode, in which our heroes played Dark Heresy. Meaning I play Dark Heresy. And it seems no matter what I do, things that have fear effects make me barf. This time I barfed for four whole rounds! It's not easy being out of the game for four turns. But when it comes to lunch, what goes down must come up. What's your roleplaying weakness?
Episode 22
Farewell Sweet Holiday Deliciousness
I'm back! I had to take a bit of time off for the holidays. Being a traveler, my fiancée and I spent a lot of time driving here and there. Regardless of my travel, I did manage to drink on of the best drinks ever concocted: Eggnog. G'dangit, I love eggnog. What holiday snack will you be missing as we drift through January?
Episode 23
Bitter Crafting Specializations
As promised, here's a bonus comic this week! Recently, my roleplaying group got back into our Dark Heresy campaign where we play as Inquisitorial assets in the 40K universe. Thamator, my robotic companion, attempted to create a new robotic arm for me after losing another limb. It took him a few tries, but he eventually nailed it. What skills do you wish you were excellent at?
Episode 24
Sweet Baby Mancupines!
Last Wednesday's D&D session got weird. Our group has a knack for naming monsters when the Monster Manual name isn't handed to us. From Treeple to Lizard Chickens, we've given names to a good handful of beasts. This time we faced a group of six manticores. But upon description, one of us shouted, "Mancupines!" and here we are. What silly things do you do playing with friends?
Episode 25
Is She Bitter? Is She Sweet?
So last Wednesday, I came clean to having my own tower. Oh yeah, and for beginning to raising a baby red dragon. The whole party knows about her now. But our dragon hunter found it especially challenging. Oh well, others love her, right? I mean, what could go wrong?
Episode 26
Sweet 3-0
I'm turning 30 on February 7th. Crazy. It doesn't feel that long ago that I was hanging around in a minivan, fishing for bootleg cassette tapes under the seat, trying to look cool. But here I am, just another big nerd. But it's a fair time to reflect. What can I become in this new year? This new decade? Who are we destined to become next?
Episode 27
The Ruins of the World
This is a small reprieve from the usual, I guess. I wasn't sure what to draw, so I wound up in my old quiet place. A place in silent ruin that's all mine. I've drawn a handful of images with settings like this. Maybe it was just time to revisit it.
Episode 28
The Bitter Bite Breeching Boat
Last week in Dungeons and Dragons, we were on a delightful boat trip across the sea. We're headed to the mountains, and it's been a pleasant trip. That is until the Dead Pirates attacked! Yeesh! We barely fought through the onslaught, and I know I wasn't sure what to think when besieged by zombies. Thank goodness my spells are there to help! What's the most tense scenario you've been in?
Episode 29
Awash in a Bittersweet Contemplative Dream
As the world around me turns to spring, it's the time of honing thoughts. What lies around the next corner? How will the next comic book go? What will bring new challenges and hurdles throughout the madness of 2018?
Episode 30
The Sweetness of Being 8 Again
About two weeks ago, I visited a group of 3rd graders working on their own comics. Their instructor, Ms. Carney, created four panels for them on Bristol and I got to do one of my own! We talked about drawing large, filling panels, and sketching lightly. I was unable to finish mine. But, luckily, Ms. Carney inked it for me and returned it so I could upload it today.
Episode 31
Being Bitterly Unplugged
Recently, I was given another great opportunity to visit a new region of South Dakota for me by going on residency. Usually, I spend the time around being in the classroom chopping away at comics, scripts, and other business. However, I was caught off guard by my lack of internet. I had no idea how little work I could do without the web. How much do you rely on the internet?
Episode 32
Sweet New Tablet
First of all, let me apologize for the delayed post! I've been struggling with schedules and this new fangled tablet. Oh! It's giving me so many neat new idea. Do you use a tablet in your creative life?
Episode 33
Chapter 2 Escaping Hell
After working with my Surface for over a week, I decided to launch into a new chapter in this comic. Originally I intended to create a journal with a fantasy narrative. Hopefully this new chapter will exhibit that concept. However, this strip took me a helluva long time. We'll see what I can continue to provide!
Episode 34
Ideation
Sometimes you just need a little bug in your ear when life gets tough. When you listen to that bug, you might learn that your chains aren't so tough, and that hell you're experiencing can be overcome. I love my little bug. What does your bug look at when escaping your hell?
Episode 35
The Breakout Begins
Sometimes when you're suffering, you have to make some drastic decisions. It's nice to take advice from your internal voices, and the support around you. But often times they'll ask you to do something crazy. What's something nuts you never thought you'd actually do?
Episode 36
Bargaining
Sometimes, when you're at the end of your rope -- or in this case, chain -- you have to make some deals. And in those times, those deals might be obscure, vague, or unwanted. What are we willing to exchange for release? And what can we do to come out with the upper hand, even when handing off control?
Episode 37
The Controller
Out of the frying pan and into the fire! Sometimes bad goes to worse. But I swear, it's rewarding to find your way through hell than around it.
Episode 38
On The Run
When problems arise, sometimes we run. What can't be solved by running?
Don't answer that. Most problems cannot be solved by fleeing. But in certain circumstances, it can save your neck.
Episode 39
Throwing the Switch
Sometimes you've just gotta cause a little trouble to get good results. I'm taking the risks of developing a narrative with this comic while working full-time on other projects. What trouble would you get into to do something awesome?
Episode 40
Making a Run For It
To quote the great Mark Mulcahy, "Sometimes you can't get around it, that's when you smash." Sounds like the Incredible Hulk, I know. But there's often obstacles that we're better off breaking through than getting over. What would you smash if you could?
Episode 41
Deep Within the Vault
If you didn't know, I've just returned from a huge road trip. I was able to see and participate with numerous super-cool things. But I'm back with a new Private Hell chapter! When you're seeking something, often times someone else is often after it. What're you seeking?
Episode 42
Here's to Life
Welcome back! I know we left off in hell, and I want to come back to that. But for now, I want to focus on being a journal. So let's hop to some more existential talk at a bar in hell!
Episode 43
Hold Onto Passion
This is the first actual single panel of Private Life in the Hell Bar. The bartender is intended to deliver existential sentiments about living our best lives, despite our lot. He's heavily influenced by the bartender in the game Catherine.
He's lacking a name. Any great ideas?
Episode 44
Accepting Invisibility
Private Life's bunny has always been an analogy for myself. I suppose he's Dylan, but I prefer to keep him nameless. I think many of us might agree, during times of social distancing it can be easy to feel invisible. But that doesn't mean we can't embrace it.
Also! We're finally on schedule for Mondays and Fridays!
Episode 45
Everybody Knows Your Name
The moment I knew this new direction would be a slight nod to Cheers while still acknowledging the rough edges in life that can make existence feel like hell, I knew I needed a Norm. Meet Bjorn, the disgruntled, anti-social panda who splits his time between the living world and the afterlife.
Do we need to name the hell bar? Maybe Mephisto's..?
Episode 46
Double Fisting
I've never had my beer snagged from me. But, boy howdy, I could see myself wanting to double fist like Bjorn.
We've got the bartender and his existential liners, the bunny with his coping mechanisms, and Bjorn with his anti-social commentary. What kind of characters is the bar missing?
Episode 47
Let's Try This Again... Seriously
I am going to try this journal thing one more time. I want to be more raw, honest, and real. I want to be the me I WANT to be. Because of that, I'll be telling stories that are specifically important to me right now. I might draw with color, pen, or create adjacent images so check these notes for the full story! Hopefully we can relate and build forward. We got this. I got this.
Episode 48
Coming Out Faithless
If you've not struggled with coming out atheist, this might seem silly. However, it has been a difficult undertaking for me. Christianity is important to many of my loved ones, and most (if not all) of my family members. I've worried that admitting atheism will ostracize me and strip me of support. But I can't say silent anymore. If you need atheist support, I'm here. Expect more honesty.
Episode 49
Breakfast Nurse
Now that I am thoroughly out as atheist, and my life is a dumpster fire (I'm guessing, I schedule these), it's time to take care of me! That's right, years of no insurance and I went to the doctor! I have high cholesterol. High-five! It is important we take care of ourselves, though.
Episode 50
Hexes in Our Blood
With my religious upbringing, I knew that any thought to the contrary was evil. If I left the faith I had, I'd clearly turn cursed and amoral and I'd wear that evil on my skin. But here's the thing: THAT DIDN'T HAPPEN. We make ourselves and set our own paths. If others see horns, wear them with grace.
Episode 51
Boundaries
Now that I am out as atheist, it's extremely hard not to think that every time a relative sends me a religious message that they are trying to pull me back in. I don't need that or want that. But how do we best set these boundaries?
Episode 52
Credulity & Contrarianism
I have recently spent a lot of time on managing my credulity. It's tremendously hard. But I think I like who I am better when I'm more skeptical. However, the balancing act between credulity and contrarianism is weird. It leaves me noticing every crazy thing anyone around me says. But we gotta ask ourselves, "What's the wildest thing I believe, and why?"
Episode 53
Horny Things
I get asked on my Twitch (twitch.tv/dylanjjacobson) why I'm always drawing characters with horns or sinister appearances. This is why. It's been one of my most healing choices I could make right now.
How do you represent yourself?
Episode 54
Zargos
I get asked on my Twitch (twitch.tv/dylanjjacobson) why I'm always drawing characters with horns or sinister appearances. This is why. It's been one of my most healing choices I could make right now.
How do you represent yourself?
