It has been 808,375 years since the creation of death. It has been five and a half years since The Blackout eclipse wrought death over the world once again. In the kingdom of Portobello, Ro spends her days scavenging for scraps, playing grungy street music, and being at the mercy of a malefic, parasitic demon that made home within her body. As far as she knows, she is the only person in the entire world who has survived such a possession. Impoverished within a divided kingdom, hunted by the violent faction she betrayed, and haunted by the memories of The Black Death—she believes her life is a tragedy, and loses hope that there is any kind end to it. That is, until she meets the black sheep of the Winchester family—an elf girl named Jaidinfaera who vows to help her banish the demon. They embark on a journey across the world of Värmäne, studying the ancient craft of thaumaturgy and rediscovering the joy and wonder they once lost.
