Tycho is saved by a young woman and is jealous that her partner gets more attention than him. He then learns from one the cats living with him that there is a legend that cats used to be human. Taking the legend at face value, he is determined that returning back to his human form will be that answer to his problem.
Tycho sets off to find the Cat Mother but realizes he doesn't even know where to begin. Luckily, some strangely familiar street cats set him on the right path.
Tycho must cross the ocean to get to Egypt in order to reach the Cat Mother, and even then it won't be that simple. Aboard a cargo vessel bound for Japan, Tycho must learn to fulfill the contract of a sea-cat with the guidance of a cat named Hval.
