Able would like to do anything but go with his family for a vacation at the Hotel Europa: A seaside hotel and spa miles away from anything interesting. At first the hotel lives up to his worst fears: it’s too rainy to go outside, the hotel is staffed by an unfriendly family, and he’s stuck babysitting his little sister. However, as he begins to explore the hotel, he discovers a secret history in locked rooms and strange passages behind walls. A war for control of the hotel has been raging for a century. He might be the key to victory. He’s just not sure whose side he’s on. Or what happens when someone wins.

Able and his family check into the Hotel Europa, a seaside resort in the middle of nowhere and the last place Able wants to spend his summer vacation. But the hotel is not what it appeared on the website: a huge labyrinth of roped off rooms managed by four strange sisters. Able befriends Fortuna, a hotel employee, and explores some of the older rooms of the hotel with her. On one of these excursions his little sister Ellie vanishes, seemingly kidnapped by a group of foxes. Frantic, Able attempts to alert his parents only to discover that they are asleep and won't wake up.
