A desperate Gilda is forced to accept help and sanctuary to heal a dying Meek from the last person she wants to. Meanwhile, flashbacks to Gilda's youth and CIA past reveal that Gilda used to be shockingly, EVIL. We find out that if Gilda And Meek had been set five years earlier, Gilda would be the villain. And we get fascinating clues and insights into what exactly it was that caused her to reject evil and work towards the betterment of the world instead. For Gilda, the hero's journey is not because of a tragic past, or destiny, or her looking to redeem herself from an unforgivable action. There is no vengeance, fate, or penance attached to why Gilda Thurman is The Chosen One Of The Chosen Five. It's because she CHOOSES to be. Which makes her prophecy moniker the most accurate thing EVER. One of my favorite issues EVER inaugurates a MAJOR Un-Iverse trope and premise I return to, usually in issues that wind up amazing: The Famous Un-Iverse Talky Issue. There is no actual adventure or danger in the present day scenes and the conflict is all between the heroes, and a problem they have to fight about and talk out like a group of adults. Gilda is going to have to answer for her actions herself. There is no adventure for the group to traipse off to, where Gilda saves everybody's lives and they decide she's not so bad after all and decide to let the matter drop instead. If the group is going to hold together, they need to talk this shit out here and NOW. And that's the most Un-Iverse thing ever and one of my favorite morals. And yes, this is one of my best issues. And the best scene in the saga so far is a talking head conversation between five people. Quintessential Un-Iverse.
