Earth is an ancient myth, long forgotten. Now, the word of the god-like Celestials is absolute, and they rule with brutal efficiency. When Joss, an Engineward, discovers and reactivates the head of an ancient ghoulem, she finds all is not as intended. Her destiny—and that of her world—lies somewhere far beyond the borders of her shantytown.
Free of the hex that has plagued it, the ghoulem’s head begins to reveal its secrets—but its reawakening does not go unnoticed. Meanwhile, Joss, Ichabod and the others attend the ‘morning ceremony’ of their late friend, where tensions run high, and the Celestials pay a visit to the shantytown to make pronouncements on the water crisis.
As the Celestials gather to discuss the reactivation of the ancient ghoulem, Virgo and Gemini consider their next move. Meanwhile, Kreek’s consciousness continues to blossom in surprising ways, and Joss gathers a crew for an expedition into the wastelands beyond the shantytown--unaware of the terror that awaits them in the ruins.
As the Celestials discover the truth about the Terran seed, Libra tries to tip the balance in their favour, and a betrayal in Shiptown puts Gemini on Joss’s trail. Meanwhile, held prisoner in the Atomists’ camp, the ghoulem’s head helps Joss plot an explosive escape—but even success means facing her deepest fears: the shades.
In the heart of the forest, Joss and the others finally learn the truth about the mysterious alien shades--and in so doing, discover the reality behind Ichabod’s worsening illness. As Gemini brings the fight to Joss--guns blazing--the picture of what happened to the missing people from the shantytown at last becomes clear.
Still reeling from their battle with Gemini, Joss, Ichabod, and the others finally arrive at their destination, a partially intact fragment of the ancient Arc ship, where they uncover explosive revelations. Meanwhile, Virgo’s conspiracy continues, and Marl returns to the shanty town to discover it’s now under the terrifying rule of Sagittarius.
Conspiracy! Blackmail! Murder! As the Celestial infighting continues, Joss and the others traverse an increasingly dangerous landscape in search of the Terran Seed, only to encounter a dark truth at the heart of an ancient Shade city. Meanwhile, Nypan and Marl plot rebellion...if they can survive the fallout of the Celestial’s machinations.
As Aquarius launches an investigation into the Celestial murder, Shiptown is brought under fierce Celestial Law, and the allegiances between the gods begin to fray. Meanwhile, Joss locates a fragment of the Oert and learns the terrible truth about what it will cost to remake the world—and the painful reality of what really happened to her father.
As Joss fights to save Kreek, dangerous fauna begins to circle the fragment of Oert. Meanwhile, Gemini returns triumphant to the Sphere, but all is not well between their two halves. Artemis makes a new friend in the direst of circumstances, and Aquarius’s investigation sheds new light on the unsolved deicide.
Virgo’s plan has been long in the making, but the time of her ascendency is here! Kneel before her! Bow your head in subservience! The Sphere is hers to command! (Oh, and don’t worry about that little uprising business in Shiptown. The Engineward and her cronies will soon be put in their place). Virgo rules supreme!
As the Celestial alliance crumbles, the Engineward leads her people in a devastating siege on the Sphere. But are the people of Shiptown prepared for the grave consequences of such an uprising and the sacrifice that’ll be required to bring peace and prosperity to Hellen?
The time has come. Is this the end, or just a new beginning? As Gemini fractures and Virgo is undone by her own hubris, Joss finds an unlikely ally willing to risk their life for her cause. The Sphere lies in ruins, but a new era is about to dawn. The Oert shall rise again!
