A mysterious disease outbreak throughout the Midwest U.S. has forced many survivors to band together in search of safety.
But when the dead rise again and can turn the living with a single scratch or bite, how does one continue on in a broken world?
The tornado sirens over Chicago begin to go off, but during a bright, sunny, stormless day. Mr. Martens, the 2nd Grade teacher at Aberdeen Elementary, gets a call from the principal telling him to pack up his class and get back to the school. Nobody knows what seems to be going on, but people are turning suddenly violent and dangerous all around them. Can he save his class from this sudden bout of mass hysteria?
Leaving the Chicago area on foot, Joshua, Phil, Sarah, Will, and Samantha are the only ones left from the class that set out in a panic from the Brookfield Zoo. The suburbs around Elmhurst are seemingly abandoned, but the stench of something rotten hangs in the air as the sirens continue to drone.
With a new survivor in tow, Joshua and Samantha go to seek out her parents so she can be with her family instead. When that fails, the idea to hunker down instead at Sarah's farmhouse becomes Plan B.
After staying the night at the Smith family farmstead, Mike and Phil are sent into the city to bring back supplies and see if they can find any police to tell them what is going on. But the police station is hardly safe, and when a man appears on Grant's doorstep, with what appears to be a bite wound, tensions rise between Joshua and their host.
The photos are seemingly enough to convince Grant to fortify the farmhouse. To do that, they need supplies; and the police station is ripe for the taking. Mike and Phil quickly learn that they aren't the only ones that survived the apparent "end of the world", for better or for worse...
The disaster of the previous night has destroyed the group. Nobody can trust anybody any longer, it seems. Edith seems suspicious of Joshua's seemingly kind intentions with Sarah. Grant decides to check out the ruins of the suburbs for himself, and they find that there are much worse people out there than Cassidy.
With a new survivor in their care, Grant has to grapple with the danger that they may pose to his family back at home, and therefore the rest of the group. Maybe it's for the best that they all go their separate ways...
Taking a risk by keeping Mackenzie at the farm, Grant gets the chance to ask what really happened on the day of the outbreak. They find Cassidy knows a lot more than the rest of them...

The first three days of the apocalypse have nearly collapsed law and order in the city and suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. An infection has spread through what seems to be more than half of the population, causing them to rise again as a flesh-hungry cannibal. However, even surviving the first few days prove to be nearly insurmountable as morale quickly runs out...
