When his brother knights are massacred by their Kandarian rivals at the Battle of Carnaugh, a young knight is given a grim ultimatum by a monstrous (and familiar) entity possessing the corpse of his fallen captain: he can return as the sole survivor and risk a court-martial for presumed desertion or return to his real home. Desperate to avoid his past, Kaelis agrees to let her resurrect a fallen comrade, his best friend, Riordan, to provide a convenient alibi—ensuring Kael returns home not as a suspected coward, but as a savior.
