After spending the summer in Japan, 16-year-old Leo returns home to Kropopulis, New Jersey, where his life has changed dramatically. A few months earlier, Leo died in an accident involving his father Markus’s experimental technology. Markus was able to bring him back to life using a machine that altered Leo’s biology, leaving him with a powerful electrical current running through his body.
Inspired by the superheroes he loves, Leo decides to use his new abilities to become a hero. He begins patrolling the city, although his first attempts are far from perfect. After a few embarrassing mistakes, Leo eventually gets the chance to stop three criminals attacking an elderly woman. He uses his electrical powers to scare them away, successfully completing his first real rescue—only to be immediately pepper-sprayed by the woman, who mistakes him for a threat.
Meanwhile, Markus continues working on his research with his assistant Bennett. Bennett secretly struggles with a mysterious figure named Doc, who appears to him and encourages him to pursue his own ambitions. Bennett begins developing H.A.R.T., a powerful new energy source that he hopes will change the world.
By the end of the chapter, Markus discovers that Leo has been secretly fighting crime. Rather than stopping him, he accepts Leo’s decision and simply asks him to be careful. As Leo prepares to continue his new life as a superhero, Bennett follows Doc into a hidden room, beginning a mysterious partnership that hints at something much larger to come.
