“So, uh- gunner. What do you think is the scariest thing out there”? “A dragon doesn't show its belly when prompted, lad”. “What”? “I can tell ya’ this, fear is what you don’t know. Ask any man his thoughts and he’ll have any number a’ answers. Met a man before who was deathly afraid a’ crows, but he had never been to lowland. And once I came across a scea who had fought for many thousands a’ years but he wouldn't think of goin’ Highland cause of those proto-barnicle things flyin’ around”. “Are they a problem”? “Nah, nah. Not a quarter size of ya’ nail but they are everywhere”.

And to that altar the binary tasks, one of worship and the other in sacrifice. No mortal can avoid them.

Chapter 9: The beckoner, the harbinger

When some find out the true meaning of the word Irda they can quickly become confused. “Why not something more base, like dirt or water or land”? But they fail to realise that ‘the altar’ is the most primal post of all.

There are scant few canopbïr who make it to the smoking point, fewer still go past this. Eight are known to exude so much heat that they melt the ice beneath them, exposing the qujra and attracting all manner of life. Most come to feed, some to nest in the canopbïrs forest like feathers. Over time these eight have made individual ecosystems of themselves, as such the killing of these immense beings is forbidden, that and the hordes that would rise to eat them could destroy Lowland civilisation.

Chapter 8: Hammer and Shield

Some say canopbïr are The Fathers favorite beasts. They are both predator and prey, recycler and distributor. What stumps and interests scholars to this day is their ability to produce heat. When a canopbïr gains enough size its very breath begins to smoke like a machine. Lowlanders say it sounds like a living tempest, icy and distant no matter how far away it could be.

An Extra Offering: an echo of things to come

And perhaps there is no better bloody bowl of communion than Lowland, whose own offerings feed back to us mortals. Eternal flesh for the ones who serve, we are all in such a wondrous cycle.

Chapter 7: An Offering

Free

Idra, to the best of my knowledge, is naught but an altar, and we all must make offerings. For us scea one is made upon our spawning,“Fathers glory be thy made, clip thine wings to keep thou tame”. This ritual stops our wanting of flight, perfect for this grounded world. Let it be known that this is the first of many offerings, in body and blood.

Chapter 6: A cold cry, a chilling chorus

You ever think about what it's like linvin’ down here? Sure the domed cities have it nice, even the great arrow city- but folks who live in ruined walls of that boonin’ time, not so easy. Spivon spikes do the heavy liftin’ but all it takes is a rowdy flock to topple any place. I wonder if those divine worry about the walls around them collapsin’ one day, I'm sure they’ve seen it countless times themselves. With no limits you could walk anywhere and wait for it to blow over. But why then would you return?

An extra little respite

Free

What does it mean for us, who have that blessed eternity and the power to shape the world? We are the great in-between. Man and beast. Chaos and order. Life and death, as it is our duty to strike down avarice and uplift those cursed. Is that all we are?

The Word Betrays Me

Chapter 5: A little respite

Free

Some say the only difference between man and beast are words, but what really sets them apart is their time and what they do with it. For humans live for only a fraction of a cycle, but their actions can echo into eternity. It is said one day can make a man's life, what could they do with eternity? A shame they will never know that answer.

Chapter 4: The Ancient Words

Free

“Old guilds keep their secrets”. A term parroted by Midlanders and mages alike. It only makes sense to keep your lips shut when your neighbour could kill you with your own words. It’s the reason Midland is divided and the reason Eptis was riddled with conflict until millennia ago. You see us Scea have an advantage over humans in magic, our tongues were never cut- so we need only the words and not the runes, given enough time a scea could learn every spell in the books… But the tenure- and those ancient secrets keep us tame.

"They say Highland makes up 92.5% of all land on Irda, that and it is so incredibly flat. Way back then I didn't have the time to truly appreciate the majesty of the fields under the grandeur of Entrobium. Now I hear there are great paths that mark the land, with houses on every road. How fortunate I was to dwell in Lowland for so long, to see the aspirations of men turn to ruin and the ice take back what it lost. Even Spinden, as I was led to it seemed ‘new’- a fortress turned city - like the rest but no longer a bastion, just a place.

"O- to see the two cities of Midland- Octris, the land consumed and Eptis the land conquered. To watch as they formed from a few meagre houses to the width and breadth of the horizon was truly a blessing. For I have seen from my tower the making of mages, their beginnings and ends. I have watched them always and will wait with anticipation until only one remains."
