Amid the chaos of friends enjoying themselves, Charlotte and Cornelius end up alone under the lanterns, a moment everyone else quietly orchestrates. At the overlook, old wounds resurface: flashbacks recall his cruelty and her pain. Charlotte speaks of fireworks as symbols of freedom and urges him to speak his truth. When he apologizes, she slaps him, not out of anger, but to stop his guilt. She tells him he didn’t hurt her, he was hurting, revealing her own fear of needing others.
