The year is 2002. Seventeen year old Monroe Félix has had a hard life. She drinks to cope, and even though things are bad, they're about to get much worse. David Black is a rich kid, and Monroe has caught his eye. Soon they begin a tumultuous love affair, but what Monroe doesn't know is that Dave is playing a game, where Monroe will always be the loser.
does he think negging her is charming? plus when he talks about his dad, monroe seems to care more about it than him. so its obvious she has it worse than him. hes not even that upset about it. a woman calling you buddy when you are trying to charm them is like the worse sign. it means you are doing super terrible. in fact, monroe tells him and hes sweating bullets. i cant believe hes already so manipulative. he bargaining with her and i feel like she lets hes comment go when she should have stood her ground. but i can understand, given her situation and all the attention she getting from him when she been neglected for so long.
that conversation in the pizza place is doing a good balancing act of showing Dave being a mean asshole but also you could see in another romantic story this as teasing as the main couple get to know each other.
ohh balding old man who’s friends with and gives drugs to teenagers. creepy.
reminds me of this creepy old man I met at a park when I was a teenager who talked about marrying me once I graduated high school and hugged me. at the time I thought it was harmless but looking back as an adult it’s like EUGH
He’s trying to sell himself as better than he is so he doesn’t scare her off. Monroe has these insecurities about herself, and her parents don’t give her a foundation of love and security so she’s more scared and thinks she won’t find better so she’s willing to settle for less
