With Karla still unconscious from the poison, Arutneva travels to colonial Havana in 1863 seeking the most powerful sorcerer of the era: Colonel Andrés Petit, master of the Abakuá brotherhood and keeper of ancient Yoruba traditions. But the Inquisidor has gotten there first, unleashing a dark curse on Andrés and his enemies to stop them. The real battle takes place inside Karla's mind, where the Inquisidor whispers that she is worthless and her art means nothing. Her answer: "Screw you. I will paint." With the help of the Orishas themselves, Andrés breaks the curse, heals Karla, and sends them forward with a powerful talisman — and two recovered pages of the Crystal Book.
