As a child Henry "Hank" Tate witnessed the murder of a man by the Ku Klux Klan, an incident that would haunt him well into adulthood. Now, as the sheriff of his hometown of Bethlehem, MS, Tate is trying to catch the racist serial killer calling himself Mr. Cross. After the arrival of a red-eyed creature in the local swamp and the killings of prominent town citizens, Tate discovers that everything that is happening might be connected to that fatefull day all those years ago.
