Waiting for the Zeta-Beam in the South African veldt, Adam Strange is shocked to find that the Zeta-Beam never appears. Wondering what happens, he calculates that the next beam will come in about eight days somewhere over the Atlantic. Traveling there at the appropriate time, Strange is relieved to be struck by the Zeta-Beam and transported to Rann. There he is greeted by a frantic Alanna, who was worried she would never see Adam again. She explains that eight days ago, instead of Adam appearing, a lizard creature the Rannians call "Zaradak" appeared instead. They soon realized that the Zeta-Beam that Adam had missed was intercepted by a runaway planet. Since then, the creature has been wreaking havoc on the city of Ranagar.

Once again in New York City, Adam Strange is once more stopped by a police officer that has seen him twice disappear while driving in his own car (In both issue #72 and issue #77) When Adam spots somebody who looks like Alanna on Earth he tries to get out of his car, but the police officer forces him to actually park it. Catching up with the girl, it turns out to be Alanna, who explains to him that her father repaired the device that could control the Zeta-Beam and sent her to Earth to visit Adam.

Traveling to Ranagar, Adam Strange is set to give out the annual award for scientist of the year, which is awarded to Akor Barth of Anathul for his radiation-detector device. One of the scientists watching the ceremony isn't satisfied with winning an award, but wants to take over the whole planet.
