Alva is half tree, half human, orphaned as a child and adopted by a living forest. All she has ever wanted was to be recognized as one of its defenders, but the oldest and wisest trees fear that she will one day abandon them for her human nature. When a retreating army arrives, desperate for wood to rebuild their defenses, Alva discovers that the only way to defend the forest may be to leave it.
