Mermaid meets human—mermaid falls in love, right? That’s how the story normally goes, but for human-hating Lillie, it’s anything but. When she’s chosen (i.e., forced) to go to human high school and remain on the surface for the next four years, she plans to interact with humans as little as possible. …she’s assigned a student council girl a day later because of “worrying, antisocial behavior”. Could humans get any more annoying?
[PREMIERES Q4? 2025]
Lillie, I know how much you detest your current situation. I also know how much you love this necklace. May it provide comfort for the next few years. Love, Mom & Dad
Currently on Page 30. I love how we can see Lillie's apprehensive look on the situation. In every panel she clearly is not a fan of this, but goes along with it anyway. Nice touch.
I love that they come across as bf gf when this is like a week post breakup for them xD (childhood best friends who thought they should date, they didn't last long, but they became more affectionate after they broke up lol)
Page 44. Super sweet seeing Lillie, Justin, and her family all love each other. That's just so sweet.
Ah, so she's gonna be gone for 4 years. That kinda makes this situation sound like college, she's even literally leaving to go to a faraway school where she can only be visited infrequently.
Not sure if that metaphor was intended, but it's a nice one ❤️
That definitely wasn't intended which is hilarious because when this first started posting in 2020 I started it as I was packing up to leave for college lol
@parkernotstark: Awww. That's so sweet 🥰
Break ups aren't exactly fun, but it's so wholesome seeing people still be friends afterwards.
I've always loved being super affectionate with my friends. You don't need to do sexual acts with someone to love and care about them, if anything doing that without the want to date them is even more beautiful ❤️
Lillie's love language is physical touch and I really wanted to show non-sexual physical love between Lillie and most people in her life. Lillie and Justin just felt like they *had* to date because they were a boy and a girl and 13 and even underwater pressure like that exists (not from Lillie's family, at least). They're best friends and nothing could separate them, even an awkward dating phase <3
Page 87. I thought one of the rules of going to the surface was that she wasn't allowed to use magic? Does that mean she can't use it around humans, but can still practice it in private?
(And yes, I read that big text wall about the rules for living on the surface back on Page 40ish~)
Page 95. Again, big fan of how the characters take Lillie's hair into account. I also have pretty long hair and it does get in my way a lot, so it's a detail I appreciate
Although I can't imagine having hair as long as Lillie's 😂
@CrumpsCrumbs: If I implied that anywhere that's my bad. Humans generally aren't supposed to see magic, but you're allow to tell them and accidents happen (different things can happen then based on how the human reacts). Magic is fully allowed on the surface, as long as it's not used to do harm or expose merfolk as a whole. Merfolk and the government want to protect merfolks existence from the wider population, otherwise there's no restrictions.
@CrumpsCrumbs: Haha I thought it'd be cute for the others to help her with her hair. And yeah Lillie's hair is a *beast* I couldn't imagine having hair that long. Closest I've got is with some wigs I own and those were a pain to wear lmfao
Finished!
Wow, so those 100 pages took a whole year to remake? That's crazy to think about.
That was a nice read! Definitely enjoyed it. It was very wholesome and warmhearted. I tend to prefer plot heavy stories with a lot of action, but this was still enjoyable 😊
The chapter admittedly had very little conflict though, and there's a lot about merfolk society I don't understand. Like, why does Lillie need to go to the surface at all? Why was she chosen to go? Why isn't she allowed to visit her family regularly? It doesn't seem like her house is very far from them. Not practicing magic around humans I get, but the magic itself also wasn't explained much either (although that one can wait to be fair, it wasn't plot relevant like having to leave home was).
I'm also interested in knowing why Lillie doesn't like humans. There was no reason or clue as to why that I saw, so I'm curious.
It's a bit late to address those questions now, but for what it's worth, I think it would benefit the story if those things do get answered. I'd be able to relate to Lillie's situation more and feel for her more if I understood why. The Council don't seem to be forcing this on her either, so my best guess is that it's just tradition, and Lillie is going to not upset anyone.
Whatever the case, you said Paperclips is going on hiatus for a full year, right? Well, I'll be looking forward to it when it returns 😊
@CrumpsCrumbs: this exact batch of pages took about seven months and being drawn every other week, it's just been a year since I put my comics on hiatus.
Paperclips definitely starts very slow and soft, but that will change in the future. Most of what you asked about will be adressed in the future. These have pretty much been the rules of the chosen student of Lillie's pod (other pods have different rules) for centuries, though it's being changed with Lillie being allowed her brother and his partner (I'll adress it in the future, I just figured I'd explain this directly now). And yeah, it's less being forced upon her directly and more like "if you don't follow this honor you will be severely punished".
And yeah, Paperclips is going back on hiatus so I can finish the rest of the story, but RATU will continue on every other week (with a tiny break) until November!
Thank you!! I hope you continue to enjoy my comics when Paperclips returns 😊
@parkernotstark: Lillie and Justin's relationship is a really interesting subject to tackle. Society, pun not intended, romanticizes straight couples. It's portrayed so commonly I see a lot of people who think a guy and girl simply hugging means they're dating.
To be honest, I've recently developed a strong desire to show physical affection, but I feel like it's bad and that something is wrong with me. It doesn't help that I don't have anyone in my life to share these feelings with either, so hearing about where Lillie and Justin's relationship is going makes me feel better, it makes me feel like I'm not weird.
Thanks Morgan. I know you're just writing cheesy fluff, but it means a lot to me ❤️
@CrumpsCrumbs: No problem! I love messing with the magic of my universe so I like to show it off a bunch haha, I have a bunch of things working there so I can eventually make some of the rules clearer. This season was just so focused on Lillie and her (at best) reluctance to go up lol
@CrumpsCrumbs: Yeah, as a lesbian I definitely have experience with that (had a "boyfriend" in 2nd grade for like two days lmao).
Justin and Lillie's relationship is one of my favorite things to write, even if it gets unfortunately sidelined for most of the story because Lillie has to leave (I'm actively writing a novel that's just Justin's side of the story though).
I'm happy my cheesy fluff means something to you. Relationships are my favorite thing to write so I spend a lot of time developing it (especially familial and platonic). 🩵❤️
