The party were captured in an ancient mine, put in collars that blocked their access to magic, and were enchanted with a Geas that punished any kind of action that went against the BBEG's wishes. They worked in the mine until Kathra, the ranger's sister, was thrown in with them. This is the prelude to their escape.
When you have your familiar take the Help action, you need to articulate exactly how they are helping. And when the challenge is a cooking competition, and your familiar is a rat, there's really only one way to play it out.
The umbrella mimic lurks in umbrella stands at busy places like restaurants and art galleries, waiting for an unscrupulous opportunist to steal it. Once carried safely away from its hunting ground, the mimic has its meal, and creeps back to await its next victim.
The bird feeder mimic is partially self-domesticated. It loves birds and enjoys their company, so it tolerates humans filling it with birdseed.
It does not tolerate squirrels, but it does think they're tasty.
