In a dystopian future, the entertainment industry has been destroyed, leaving only gladiatorial fights fought by unwilling competitors, controlled by special collars that allow their masters to dictate their every move.
Dae, a recently captured fighter, finds himself the possession of eight-year-old Mia, the neglected daughter of a CEO, and the law is clear: She can only keep him if he fights in a death match once a week.
Our heroes are forced to enter a six vs six match with Raid, June, and Tempest. With microphones broadcasting their plans to the enemy, Dae struggles to keep his friends alive long enough to enact his agenda.
Haze learns more about what happened to lead to slavery being introduced and where the bands came from. Meanwhile, Dae goes out into the night to find the slaves he freed earlier.
Dae's worst fear, Tnemrot discovering his agenda, may come to light as the Ref and his militia close in on the safe house. The newly freed fighters don't trust him, Haze is unable to help due to the commands on his collar and they are all severely under armed compared to the troops outside. But as Dae weighs his options, the Ref is becoming impatient.
Dae and Haze aren't out of the woods yet. They still need to make it home before the cops show up. Also, we flashback a few years to see what life was like for Dae, Haze and Tempest when they were still with the resistance, as well as Penny's story.
The last chapter in volume two sets the stage for book three. As Tempest wraps up Raid and June's identities, Jason the Ref confronts the Morris boys to ensure they know the hierarchy in Tnemrot.
The bands that give the fighters strength are also toxic, and due to her years of captivity, Angel is starting to show signs of sickness. Meanwhile, Jason the Ref is concerned Tnemrot may not survive until its reopening and is desperate to get the money to do so.
Dae is managing to hold his own against Raven, but is nowhere near winning. What's worse, Morris' sniper is lining up and ready to take him out, whether or not he wins.
After contacting Tempest, Dae realises that he needs to get to the six or else they could be in danger. But with his injury, he is unable to go out and save them. Angel volunteers to go with Haze to New Harlem while June must get some information off of Morris.
The heroes find themselves in the new Domain Tnemrot. With new dangers and obstacles, they need to keep on their toes and avoid the wild cards just to survive.
It's the end of the games. The resistance has attacked and the guards are not going down without a fight. But not everyone will come out of this alive.
