My theory is that the "time limit" they have to escape is simply how long it takes them to die in the real world. since they can't eat or drink. This is backed up by the fact that when mother says, "It will soon pass." because if they are dead they will no long feel hungry and wont have to eat anymore, especially since they can't replenish their hunger in the house. so when Od dog says, "I was to late." I think he meant his body in the real world had died, so he can no longer return to there. Also, in the teaser trailer, it was shown that Katie, (or curious cat) was still alive in the outside world, staring at the tv, and saying the line "I'm...home." So they are in fact alive...atleast until they die from hunger or dehydration.
