The main character Gabe Kullens, is a retired Running Back who’s striving
to have success in a second career as a visionary developer. This has led to
him overseeing the building of Technopolis a huge resort and theme park in
Dubai.
Under great stress from the responsibility he’s taken on, the story opens
with him having a fight with his wife Norah, that results in him leaving for the
night after he tells her to meet him in the morning to be present for an important
appointment.
The next day he wakes up having overslept in his car. Norah is nowhere
to be found and the entire city of Chicago is completely empty of any people.
As he wanders around trying to make sense of what’s happening, there are a
number of disturbing situations he encounters which all lead him to think that
aliens have invaded and he’s the last man on Earth.
For instance in addition to many inexplicable things like there being snow
on the ground even though it feels like summer, dangerous creatures try and kill
him along with an army of aliens that try and capture him. He finally finds his
wife Norah sitting on the side of a building but she refuses to speak with him
which all adds to the puzzle of what’s really going on.
After seeing Gabe go through many narrow escapes and a great deal of
internal turmoil, he’s finally caught and the reader finds out what’s really going
on.
