Octane Render

Machine learning technology (A.I.) has been developed to the point where it can now roughly approximate the creative output of human writers and artists… …But what does this actually mean for those human writers and artists? Melbourne-based cartoonist David Blumenstein spoke to the Australian comics/illustration community about this, and decided to document their responses whilst posing further questions. Ostensibly this is a story about machine learning systems that make pictures, but really it’s about why society holds the desire to innovate around human artists. This is the revised and revisited second edition of the Comic Arts of Australia Award-winning non-fiction book by Squishface Studio co-founder David Blumenstein.

Plato's Allegory of the Cave

Plato’s Republic is one of the most important works of both philosophy and political theory in the Western canon. Arguably the most famous section of the Republic appears at the start of book VII, The Allegory of the Cave, which explores the effects of education on how we perceive the world around us. The famous allegory is adapted here into the comics medium. As a Socratic Dialogue the Allegory of the Cave is wonderfully suited to this adaptation. The vast majority of the text, as translated by Benjamin Jowett, has been recreated verbatim in the comic.
