Calcata

Calcata

the long summer of '78 goes on, with the discovery of a beautiful old village near Rome, a village that was being abandoned by the residents in favor of the newly built one. The old houses, the caves along the hills, were all being sold to kids moving in in search of... in search of what we're all searching on, no one excluded, do I need to say it ? Have we forgotten what we're all looking for in life?

Landing in Rome

Free with Gold

After a night of free world class jazz concerts, hundreds of kids refused to buy even the train ticket back to Rome, and got trapped on a VIP-only train, which delivered them to Rome's Termini station where a huge number of policemen were waiting, batons and all, to bend the kids to the will of the state.

As I spend my time grasping for an anchor, I try hard to deny the evidence that would lead any sane person to believe there's no substance to anything we believe in. Yet, we keep believing, and when a belief fails, whether it's political or personal, we fall into despair until we have another one to delude ourselves with

Sogno e realta'

Free with Gold

Between Dream and "Reality"

Free with Gold

Sometimes we're not at all sure of what is going on, drifting in the space of a few minutes between a world of isolation and a shared universe, back and forth, aware that choosing one over the other is a consequential choice with weights and ramifications we are unable to comprehend. And yet, sometimes we realize we have to choose one or the other.

One of those

In the past, if we'd been lucky in life, we can only find a handful of moments where we could wish for nothing more, moments when - even for an instant - our longing, our meandering between past and future stopped, because all we wanted was right there.

I'll leave it to future episodes to explain this... Although... if you're an introvert and a smoker, trying to lose your virginity without a smoke handy is not a good idea, it won't help the jitters... And yes, there were several other reasons which hopefully will become clear, but I really wanted a smoke!

It's exactly when we least expect it, when we don't look for it, that the Universe reveas its tapestry of opportunities, opportunities which we shouldn't miss, opportunities which in other moments we try to conjure with our goofy actions, our cartoonishly bad planning.

In ancient times music was free, cities were welcoming, summer was for everyone. Not exactly, but Umbria Jazz concerts were free, and that became a magnet for way too many people in 1978.

Stowaways

Free with Gold

Upon reaching Palermo we found a "connection", someone who not only gave us stuff to sell on credit, but also told us how to travel to Naples as stowaways using what seemed to be a well oiled underground economic model, a fraud which today would be frowned upon, but back then it was not only a way to get back at an exploitative system, but it had a long tradition of popular resistence in a land where tyrants took Italy from one another often leaving the population to rely on their own survival skills.
